The R.H. Johnson Library, Sands Pickleball Courts, Men’s Club and south Auto-Restoration Club parking area will be closed for a few weeks in September when the Recreation Centers of Sun City West paves a large swath of the lot.
The library is scheduled to be closed Sept. 6-16, while the pickleball courts and Men’s Club will be closed Sept. 19-27. These dates are confirmed but can change if initial asphalt removal uncovers soil issues that require additional stabilization work before new pavement can be poured. Rain and other weather issues also can affect completion dates.
During each phase of closure, that area’s parking lot and adjacent common driveway will be blocked off; this includes the adjacent driveway in front of the Sports Pavilion’s south entry and west side curving drive along pickleball, and all areas in between. The north side entry of the Sports Pavilion and Memo’s Restaurant will be accessible through other areas off Meeker Boulevard (see accompanying graphic). The Library, Men’s Club and pickleball will not be open at all during their scheduled phase.
Before the library closes – beginning the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 3 – the library will increase loan limits for DVDs and Blu-rays to 14 items and nine puzzles. The library also will extend its loan periods and will forgive fines during the closure.
The library’s digital materials will be available during the closure. To learn about accessing online eBooks and audiobooks, contact the Data Resource Center at 623-544-6644 before Sept. 3 for training.
No materials or book donations should be left anywhere near the library during the closure. Members are asked to keep materials with them until the facility reopens. If library materials must be returned during the short closure, they may be handed to the library staff who will be temporarily relocated to the former Village Store, near the Lecture Hall, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Do not leave materials unattended; they are the members’ responsibility until they are handed to a staff member. These staff members will be answering the library’s main phone line at 623-544-6130 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays.
The Sports Pavilion will retain regular hours. Please enter through the north side, near Memo’s. Pickleballers should use the courts at Palm Ridge.
Map of work area for R.H. Johnson Parking Lot

I hope when you do by Johnson pool you do an aisle for just golf carts. They take up a whole parking space and they don’t need to.
Kathleen, USUALLY two golf carts take up one car space so no real need to make any additional spaces for just golf carts.
Yes people should park double in a parking spot but many do not. Do they not know the policy or are just thoughtless
When will basketball court reopen at Beardsley? Stupid to keep that area closed as there is an outer gate to allow access.
Hope they patch the disintegration at the main driveway where it meets RHJ. Was patched beer but it’s bad again.
There is an entrance to the RHJ parking lot off of Meeker Blvd
between the ARC and the walking track. It would be nice if when you apply the yellow striping at that exit/entrance, that you provide three lanes: one to enter and two to exit. One exit lane would be for left turns and one exit lane for right turns.
Hi Robert. Thank you for your suggestion. We have shared it with the appropriate staff members.
Hello Robert. Thank you very much for your suggestion. This has been requested and investigated multiple times over the years. The Del Webb constructed entries were not built for left and right turn lanes, the exit is not wide enough per Maricopa County Dept. of Transportation codes on street egress. This is the same reason you do not see split 2-car road markings at the Fry’s/ R.H. Johnson Blvd. stop light. It was designed for single lane left and right egress onto the boulevards. When two cars are next to each other the width has to be enough that the other vehicle does don’t obscure line of site to the perpendicular street they are attempting to turn onto.
If there’s enough room, it would be great if you could mark both exits onto Meeker with both left and right turns. Thanks!
Hi Karyl. Thank you for your suggestion. We have shared it with the appropriate staff members.
Relative to golf cart parking. Some cart drivers insist on using an entire space.
Somehow that should be discouraged.
