The Green Team and Stardust Golf Course to host First Swing clinic in November

The Green Team and Stardust Golf Course to host First Swing clinic in November

Update: The Green Team has had a tremendous response for the Nov. 13 First Swing Event at Stardust Golf Course. Registration has been closed as all 60 spots, as well as their wait list, are now both full.

Stardust Golf Course will play host to the popular First Swing clinic, which is structured specifically for people who are new to golf and want to learn how to play the game. Golfers who have not played for a while and want to get back into the game are also welcome to participate.
The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Stardust Golf Course. The time frame has been extended to accommodate staggered registration, start times and check-out times, allowing only one group of 12 to register, start or check-out at any given time. Each group would only be at the golf course for approximately two and a half hours.
This hands-on clinic is free to SCW residents who currently hold rec cards and have not participated in a previous First Swing clinic.
The Sun City West Green Team offers this special day to encourage friends and neighbors who are interested in learning the game to come out and try some fundamental golf skills. First Swing instructions by our PGA pros and mentors will include woods, irons, putting, chipping, and some basic information about playing the game of golf.
Space is limited to 60 participants and only 6 to 10 will be put on a wait list. Registration will be open from Sept. 10 to Oct. 22 or until the clinic is full. When registration opens on Sept. 10, those interested can sign up by sending an email to greenteam@suncitywest.com with the following information:

  • Telephone number
  • Your rec card number and your spouses if applicable
  • Your email address. The same email will be used for each spouse
  • Will you need clubs? If so, right or left handed?

Most golfers during their lifetime will never get a hole in one. Ed Anderson was one of those until Aug. 26 when he got his first one at Echo Mesa on the sixteenth hole. Less than one week later, Ed got his second hole in one at Desert Trails on Aug. 31 on the eleventh hole! Ed is a high handicapper who started golfing later in life.
Congratulations Ed on your accomplishment!

Message from RCSCW Environmental Services Manager on this year’s transition period

Message from RCSCW Environmental Services Manager on this year’s transition period

The Rec Centers would like to pass along the following message to the community from the RCSCW Environmental Services Manager concerning this year’s transition period from winter ryegrass to summer bermudagrass.

Each year the golf courses go through a transition period from winter ryegrass to summer bermudagrass. This usually starts during the month of May and can last through July.

The older golf courses such as Pebblebrook, Grandview, Stardust and Echo Mesa have what is called common bermudagrass. This type of grass tends to have a slower recovery period during transition.

The newer courses – Trail Ridge, Deer Valley and Desert Trails have 328-Tifgreen, which normally transitions better than the common bermudagrass.

This year’s transition looks to be a little more challenging than previous years, due to increased cart traffic from COVID-19 restrictions and lack of rainfall this past winter.

Staff will be addressing transition areas through fertilization, spot watering, aerification and sodding areas as needed.

This is always a challenging time for our superintendents and their staff. We appreciate your patience as we strive to give our members the best year-round conditions possible.

Grandview Golf Course to close for summer maintenance

Grandview Golf Course to close for summer maintenance

The Grandview Golf Course, practice range and pro shop will be closed for summer maintenance June 17-21, however the Crooked Putter will remain open.

There also will be repairs to the restrooms, which should take two weeks but also result in their closure during that time. Portable toilets will be brought on premises for customer and staff use during this time. They will be located near the practice range. The portable toilets are scheduled to be delivered on June 16. Facility Maintenance personnel will oversee and direct their placement.
