Featured Image: The Recreation Centers of Sun City West recently unveiled new historical signs at each of the community’s four recreation centers. The signs were created by the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum and provide historical information on each of the facilities. The signs are located at the entrance to each center. Unveiling the sign at the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center are, from left, Russell Boston, facilities manager for the Recreation Centers of Sun City West; Bret McKeand, president of the Sun Cities Area Historical Society; Anne Levig, Sun Cities Area Historical Society trustee; Katy O’Grady, general services officer for the Recreation Centers of Sun City West; Paul Herrmann, vice president of the Sun Cities Area Historical Society.

The Recreation Centers of Sun City West has partnered with the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum to create four historical signs recently installed at each of the community’s four recreation centers.

The signs provide a brief history of each center and explain the story behind the names of each facility.

In the case of the R.H. Johnson, Fred Kuentz and William Beardsley recreation centers, the signs also provide a biography of the person for whom each center was named. The signboards have been installed at the main entrance to each facility.

The Del Webb Sun Cities Museum, owned by the Sun Cities Area Historical Society, designed each sign and covered the cost of printing each one. Each sign is printed on a sheet of aluminum to protect it from all weather conditions.

The Recreation Centers of Sun City West covered the cost of installing each sign at each of the recreation centers.

The Del Webb Sun Cities Museum is located at 10801 W. Oakmont Drive, in one of the first of five original model homes opened in Sun City.

The museum is open from noon to 3 p.m. on Sundays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. Call 623-974-2568 to book a group tour.
