The Recreation Centers of Sun City West have a series of capital projects planned for the remainder of 2021.
Here is the tentative schedule and the work that will be tackled during that time:
October 2021
- R.H. Johnson Recreation Center
- Kuentz Recreation Center
- Beardsley Recreation Center
- Palm Ridge Recreation Center
- Metal Shop Club
- R.H. Johnson swim and fitness flooring project – Project began on Sept. 27. Phase one of the project is currently in progress with two week demo closure. Facility lobby and pool to reopen after demo traffic and scheduled repairs to pool deck are complete on Oct. 11. Project flyer
- Racquetball Courts screen and seal – Project completed on Sept. 24. Courts have been reopened.
- Kuentz parking lot asphalt mill & replacement
- Phase 1 – Completed!
- Phase 2 – Sept. 24 to TBD
- Phase 2 – After removal of the south lot’s old asphalt, it was determined that soil stabilization is a required step prior to the placement of new asphalt and was also impacted by this past weekend’s (Sept. 25 and 26) rain. General Manager and Staff have agreed to extend the closure for natural drying and stabilizing to take place in lieu of the high cost of concrete powder soils stabilization process. The decision to naturally dry the lots soil prevents approximately $70,000 of additional costs, while requiring 3 to 4 weeks of inconvenient added closure time. Staff is making efforts to reach out to The Foundation for assistance in additional parking to accommodate Softball and Theatre Events scheduled during this timeframe.
- Phased closure will allow for Kuentz to maintain daily operations.
- Kuentz parking lot lighting project – Project completed on Sept. 30.
Beardsley aquatic pool lighting project – Project was completed on Sept. 17. Pool has been reopened.
Outdoor and indoor pool leak detection – On Wednesday, Sept. 29, the Palm Ridge Swim and Fitness building will be closed until 7 a.m. as the water for the building will be shut off so leak detectors can locate a leak on the outdoor deck.
- Metal Shop Addition – Facility is currently closed. General contractor foundation work in progress. APS scheduled to replace existing transformer to upgraded equipment and install new wiring from Nov. 8 through December.

I absolutely love how the Rec Center continues to upgrade our facilities. Thanks
Very impressive. Such projects keep SCW ahead of the Sun Cites
Very impressive. Such projects show why SCW is the leader of the Sun Cities
Can you confirm that Pickleball will be available at Kuentz? We purposely purchased a home away from the obnoxious sounds of pickleball noise at Palm Ridge, so please tell me our neighborhood didn’t approve outdoor pickleball at Kuentz😥 We value our outdoor patio time without the obnoxious sounds of bouncing balls!!!
Susan, there are no plans at this time for Pickleball at Kuentz.
I believe Pickle Ball is currently being played on the Kuentz tennis courts…. so I’m confused by your response🤷♀️
Susan, this was considered as a temporary option at one time when Palm Ridge was closed, but was not implemented. If you do see pickleball being played on the Kuentz Tennis Courts, please notify the facility lead. Thank you.
Any capital funds available to re-do the walls on Stardust – they look horrible!!
Hi Susan. Most of the walls on Stardust are not painted, but are natural block. Because of the grass and irrigation systems, the discoloration occurs and, as you stated, can be quite unsightly. We encourage the area HOAs to scalp their grass away from the walls to help eliminate the water on the block, which causes the discoloration.
Thank you for your response – unfortunately killing the grass that is growing against the walls does not restore the damage already done- the Stardust walls are an embarrassment.
What is Schedule for SCW Metal Club Reopening?
Russell, the project is tentatively scheduled for reopening in October.
Russell, Due to some APS electrical engineering conditions, and availability of materials scheduling the Metal Shop will remain closed until the project is complete and receives the Certificate of Occupancy from Maricopa County. I’m currently tracking this to be in November.
Pickleball keeps growing. Soon new courts must be built. Look how many members they have
It nice to know what is being done however, What are the budgeted amounts for these improvements. I assume the board has reviewed the bids?
Terry, major capital projects can be found in the approved budget, beginning on page 9 here: https://suncitywest.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Budget-Packet-Final-05.28.20-GB-Approved.pdf
Beardsley Pool seems to undergo constant renovations each year, the downtime and cost must be mounting. When will they decided to finally tear it out completely and rebuild the pool much like they did with RH Johnson and start fresh?
There are so many residents that cannot be exposed to the sun, and deserve to have an updated facility.
You are correct about many residents needing to stay out of as much sun as possible while using a pool. We are thankful for the beautiful pool facility at RH Johnson for those who can enjoy the outdoor pool facility.
The workout facilities are sub standard , very outdated. I am curious to know if there is a plan to upgrade. My wife and I moved to SCW Feb of 2020. We were surprised at the lack of equipment, seems SCW is bit behind the curve.
Michael, the facilities are updated on a regular basis. Kuentz was just updated with new equipment in the last year. Is there a specific facility you’re referring to? What kind of equipment would you be interested? Thanks for your input.
