 Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – June 25, 2018

Facility Projects:

1. R. H. Johnson Tennis Project Phase 1 & 2 is in progress. Platform Tennis is closing Tuesday for sidewalk excavation.

2. The ARC Paint Booth project is in progress. The arrival of Bunger Steel Erection is delayed until July 11 due to a labor shortage on their end.

3. RHJ Tennis Restroom floor concrete has been removed. The exterior wall has been shored up prior to demolition taking place which will is scheduled between June 25 through June 29.

4. R. H. Johnson directional signage is 50% installed with the remaining 50% of the work in progress.

5. R. H. Johnson Monument Signs Project is in progress. Design forms are scheduled to be poured June 25.

6. Palm Ridge Pool Deck obstacles have been corrected. We are currently testing the pool plumbing for leaks after the repairs have been made. The final installation of the drain will take place this week and concrete is scheduled for a late week pour. Once the testing is completed and no leaks are detected we will apply the flooring application.

7. The Palm Ridge Acacia Room flooring is scheduled to be installed June 27 through June 30.

8. The RHJ Great Lawn Grill Lighting will be installed today, June 25.

Recreation:

9. Our Summer Series Subscription tickets are $21.00 each and are on sale on line and at the SCW Box Office. Individual tickets went on sale the first week of May for our remaining Summer Series Acts are July 9 (Johnny Cash Tribute) and August 13 (Peter, Paul & Mary Tribute). This year the Summer Series will be held at the Palm Ridge Recreation Center.

10. Join us for our Sizzling Summer Lineup! These will be a series of smaller shows at the Lecture Hall this summer to help you beat the heat; one in July, two in August and one in September.  There will be two shows per day; 1pm & 3pm.  Half of the available tickets have been sold.  Tickets are priced at $5 each, available at the RHJ Box Office.  The performers we have lined up are:

July 19  –  The Legend of Song, T. A. Burrows

Aug   9  –  The Kehlers

Aug 23  –  The Brass Quintet

Sept 13  –  String Quartet

11. Our Dive-In Movie at the R.H. Johnson Pool scheduled for Saturday, 6-23-18 was attended by 250. The featured movie was “Central Intelligence”.  The next Dive-In Movie is tentatively scheduled for September.  More details will be forthcoming!

12. Palm Ridge Indoor Pool continues to be closed for deck renovation/resurfacing as well as other maintenance projects. Walking Track and Fitness Center are open when available. The Kuentz Facility is opening at 5 a.m. to provide members more swim time during the closure of Palm Ridge Pool.  We expect the pool to be reopened during the first week of August and will be able to provide a more exact date as we get further along with this project.

13. All 800 tickets have been distributed for our July 4^th event on Wednesday, July 4 at the Palm Ridge Rec. Center. Anyone wanting to see the show is encouraged to show up to see if there are unused tickets or that they can be accommodated.

14. Mona and Jan in Tours and Scheduling are working very hard to accommodate our Clubs and are ahead of schedule booking all submitted Club reservations. Great job ladies!

15. Kristie will be out 6/22/18 and return on 7/2/18. Dave Bennet will be Acting Recreation Manager while she is away.

16. An Association Member is donating a large metal butterfly sculpture he personally made to the Recreation Centers which we plan to install at Beardsley Park near the Meditation Garden. We will provide more details as this project progresses.

Sports Pavlion:

17. We will be hosting the Metro Phoenix Senior Open, Saturday and Sunday, January 26 and 27 of 2019. We expect 300 participants.

18. The weekend following the Metro Phoenix Senior Open, we host the Master’s Tournament for one day at the Sports Pavilion.

General Services:

19. Diana Starbuck continues training chartered clubs on the new Divi Template software.

Library:

20. Author J.C Eaton, the Sun City West husband-and-wife writing team of James Clapp and Ann Golfarb, will present a special release-day book talk and signing with lots of fun giveaways. At 11:00 a.m. tomorrow Tuesday, June 26 in the R. H. Johnson Social Hall. All are welcome; tickets are not required.  “Stage- 4 Murder” is the third book in the hilarious Sophie Kimball Cozy Mysteries series.  It is set in Sun City West and features the Stardust Theater.  Copies of all three books of the series will be available for purchase at the venue.

21. The new signage, the landscaping and the work on the parking lot at the Library turned out great and give a refreshed and updated look to the Library

Golf Operations:

22. Golf revenue for the month of June is up 10% and 500 rounds vs. prior year. Part of this may be attributed to Stardust Golf Course being closed for the summer this year as opposed to Grandview Golf Course being closed for the summer last year and temperatures not being quite as hot.

23. The Golf Operations Dept. is boxing up their offices and will be temporarily moving to Stardust Golf Course while the Pebblebrook remodel takes place.

Environmental Services:

24. Echo Mesa Golf Course reopens Tuesday, 6/26/19 following summer maintenance.

25. Grandview Golf Course closes for summer maintenance on Monday, June 25 and will reopen on Tuesday, July 3.

26. We will be hiring a new palm tree trimming company to replace the previous one. The cost will increase $1 per palm tree.

27. We experienced another round of electrical problems at the Echo Mesa Well Pump site. The problems have been addressed and the pump is now working.

28. Landscape Maintenance is working on straightening and re-staking some of the newly planted Live Oak trees along R. H. Johnson Blvd. There are several trees that did not make it and they will be replaced under warranty.  One Live Oak along RHJ Blvd. was pulled up and stolen.  It appears it was yanked out the hole, dragged along the sidewalk a bit and probably thrown into a car.

29. We will be installing a new, more efficient drip system for the palm trees at RHJ Pool.

30. Summer aerification of the Lawn Bowls Courts are scheduled this week. Two will be done today and two more on Wednesday.

31. The long-range weather forecast for July, August and September calls for large amounts of much-needed rain.

July 2018

Wed July 4                                         Patriotic tunes fill the air July 4. The Recreation Centers of Sun City West is happy to present a Fourth of July Show at 1 p.m. July 4 at Palm Ridge Rec Center, 13800 W. Deer Valley Road. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. The show is free to Sun City West residents – two tickets per rec card – and are available at the R.H Johnson Box Office, 19803 N R H Johnson Blvd. The Fourth of July Show will be a medley of An American Journey in Song. We will combine performances of the vocal talents of The Arizona Singers with the sounds of Clark and Ellie Chaffee’s Swing Time Quintet with guest artist Dan Reed.

Mon July 9, & Aug 13                      Beat the heat with cool Summer Series acts. With summer around the corner, it is time to find some fun, indoor events and the Recreation Centers of Sun City West has just the answer – the 2018 Summer Series. This year, the Summer Series will move to the Palm Ridge Rec. Center, 13800 Deer Valley Drive. Series subscriptions are $21 per person and are on sale at suncitywest.com or at the R.H. Johnson Box Office, 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd. Individual event tickets are $10 and will be on sale beginning Tuesday, May 8. There will be no ticket refunds or exchanges. All shows are open to the public and begin at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

JULY 9 C Steve Music – Johnny Cash Tribute This 90-minute show opens with the distinct reminiscent “Boom Chicka Boom” sound as the rich, soulful, baritone vocal delivers the most identifiable Johnny Cash Song, “Folsom Prison Blues.” Your guests will be instantly captivated! They will yearn for more as the magical story about the greatest entertainer of the 20th century is about to unfold in song, recitation, humor and narrative. AUG. 13 MacDougal Street West A Peter, Paul & Mary Experience MacDougal Street West: the sounds of Greenwich Village now. They are a Peter, Paul and Mary tribute band for larger venues and for local performances. Our band members consist of Ron Skelton, Mary Alberts, Rick Shore and Bill Rice. The new flowering of a vibrant musical tradition was rooted in Greenwich Village of the early 1960s. Now legendary folk singers and songwriters of that era could first be heard nightly in the cafes stretching along fabled MacDougal Street. Today great folk still lives on in MacDougal Street West. The urban vibe of Greenwich Village emanates now from Arizona and elicits memories of exciting times past and hopes for brighter days ahead. Ron Skelton: Guitar, vocals – Hailing from Lancaster, Calif., Ron loved music performance from an early age. He has been singing and performing with his guitar since his high school days. Coupling with that his experience of barbershop quartet harmonies has made Ron a polished group or solo performer. Mary Alberts: Vocals – Having grown up in the ’60s, Mary Alberts finds particular joy in keeping alive the good vibe of one of her musical heroes, Mary Travers. You can hear and see the affinity between them in the contemporary Mary’s contributions to MacDougal Street West performances. A similar warmth of tone and personality with the original Mary helps listeners harken back to the halcyon days of the Peter, Paul, and Mary experience. Rick Shore: Guitar, vocals – In 1962, Peter, Paul and Mary’s first album was released. After the album, 11-year old Rick asked if he could learn to play guitar and hasn’t stopped learning and playing. From junior high through college, Rick has been in groups that feature his favorite sounds: PPM, Kingston Trio, Beach Boys, Hollies, Buffalo Springfield and CSNY. Bill Rice: Bass, guitar – Bill was born and raised in the “badlands” of eastern Montana, but headed south to Texas in ‘76. He played in several bands in and around Austin for years, finally arriving in Prescott in 1999.

Thurs July 19 & Aug 9                     Sizzling summer specials heat up in Lecture Hall. Join the Recreation Centers of Sun City West for a new format of shows that will be offered in the Lecture Hall in the July and August as part of our Sizzling Summer Specials. First up will be T.A. Burrows who will perform his “Legends of Song” at 1 and 3 p.m. Thursday, July 19, followed by The Kehlers on Thursday, Aug. 9, both in the Lecture Hall. Tickets for both shows are available online at suncitywest.com or at the Box Office, 19803 N R.H. Johnson Blvd., for the low price of $5. All seats are general admission. Doors will open at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. for each show.

                                                            Thursday, July 19 T.A. Burrows’ “Legends of Song”. T.A. Burrows uses his remarkable vocal talents to create a delightful trip down memory lane, featuring such standards as “Misty,” “That’s Life,” “Mr. Bojangles,” “Georgia,” “That’s Amore” and more.                                                             Thursday, August 9 The Kehlers. The Kehlers’ singing and playing style will make your toes tap and your ears smile! For 43 years, Steve and Darlene have been entertaining audiences with a large repertoire of country, folk, bluegrass and gospel favorites. Steve boasts a unique, folksy voice and is a natural on the harmonica, acoustic guitar and mandolin. Darlene accompanies him on bass guitar (she is the only performing female bass player in Sun City West)! The Kehlers are pleased to be joined by guest performer Frank Menolascino on electric guitar. Frank, facility lead at Kuentz Recreation Center, plays a mean guitar that should not be missed. Purchase your tickets now for an afternoon of musical fun and enjoyment!
