 Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – June 04, 2018

Facility Projects:

1. H. Johnson Directional Signage concrete work continues. Benchwork is on-going.

2. Kuentz Stardust Backstage Restrooms Remodel Project is completed.

3. The R. H. Johnson Tennis Restroom Expansion is in progress. We continue demolition and structural support prep work.

4. The R. H. Johnson Great Lawn Grill Area Lighting Addition Foundation was completed on 5/17/18. The lighting fixtures are scheduled to be delivered on June 25 and will be installed once received.  We are also planning to put pavers down by the grill area.

5. Maricopa County has approved all our signage. We now must take our request through the permitting process and have been requested to submit no more than three permit requests at a time.

Facility Maintenance:

6. The Lapidary Club Bldg. will be closed this week. We are installing new carpeting and re-applying epoxy on the floors.

7. The Leather Club will also be closing this week so we can remove cabinets and relocate lockers.

8. Palm Ridge Pool is closed this week so we can repair/replace the hot water lines in the pump room, replace a main water separation valve, and install low lighting around the pool.

9. We will be adding additional lighting out at the Men’s Club parking lot to increase visibility at night. Recent changes in that parking reduced the original lighting in that area.

10. We will be installing a new sink and countertop in the Model Railroad Club Bldg.

11. We had a drone do a flyover of the first nine holes of Stardust Golf Course. We’d like to get some before and after pictures as we proceed with the summer maintenance work at Stardust Golf Course.

12. All paperwork has been completed for the Digital Sign Update and sent over to the vendor. It will take approximately 4 weeks to produce the sign.  Once completed it will be sent to Ken’s Signs who will install it at the R. H. Johnson Center to replace the previous sign.

13. Russ is working with a Dunn and Edwards Representative on possible color palettes for painting the exterior of Kuentz Recreation Center using a software program to illustrate the possibilities.

Recreation:

14. Our Summer Series Subscription tickets are $21.00 each and are already on sale on line and at the SCW Box Office. Individual tickets went on sale the first week of May for our Summer Series Acts, June 11 (A Little Help from my Friends), July 9 (Johnny Cash Tribute) and August 13 (Peter, Paul & Mary Tribute). This year the Summer Series will be held at the Palm Ridge Recreation Center.

15. Our Memorial Day show featuring the Westwind Harmony Chorus was well received. 50 people who were on a waiting list to see the show were able to be seated.  The Westwind Harmony Chorus had a wonderful performance!

16. Join us for our Sizzling Summer Lineup! These will be a series of smaller shows at the Lecture Hall this summer to help you beat the heat; one in July, two in August and one in September.  There will be two shows per day; 1pm & 3pm.  Half of the available tickets have been sold.  Tickets are priced at $5 each, available at the RHJ Box Office.  The performers we have lined up are:

July 19  –  The Legend of Song, T. A. Burrows

Aug   9  –  The Kehlers

Aug 23  –  The Brass Quintet

Sept 13  –  String Quartet

17. 208 people attended our Dive-In Movie at the R.H. Johnson Pool. Members watched Jumanji – Welcome to the Jungle from the pool, many floating on rafts.
18. Updated information regarding our Fall Fest Event; Tickets for the Eagles have been sold out. We still have tickets remaining for the Beatles.

19. Beardsley Mini Golf Course is closed for the summer.

20. Palm Ridge Indoor Pool is closed for deck renovation/resurfacing.

21. The Stardust Theater Rest Room Remodel has been completed and it looks great. Many thanks to Projects Supt. Karl Wilhelm for his input and guidance on this project.

Sports Pavilion:

22. Sunday’s Bowling Special brought in $460.

23. Sports Pavilion revenue was up $3,000 for the month of May mostly due to open play.

Village Store:

24. The Village Store is closed on Saturdays until October 2018. On July 26 the Store closes for the summer for maintenance and any repairs needed.

25. Revenue at the Village Store combined with security mailbox sales at the Metal Club came in just over $24,000 for the month of May.

General Services:

26. We are working to convert chartered clubs to the new Divi Template software and will continue this process through the summer. We started out with Clubs that have very little content on their websites and will notify other clubs before they are going to be converted.  We will also offer group training sessions for each of the club’s content managers (formerly webmasters).

27. We plan to meet this week on revised training modules for the Fall 2018 TORCH Class. The new sessions which include Leadership modules will replace the team projects.   Please call the Governing Board Executive Assistant at 623-544-6115 for more details or to register.

28. We continue working to review implementation of an e-Commerce module through TEG that will allow members to purchase guest credits online in the same area they pay their annual dues. We would like to try and have it up and running before summer when grandparents host their grandchildren.

29. Postcards for the notification of our annual meeting have been mailed out to all SCW homes. Members should be receiving them during the next couple of weeks.

30. We have installed and will be testing vertical scanners at Member Services, Check-in desks at our Recreation Facilities and at our golf courses. Once up and running these scanners will allow our members to take a picture of their Rec. Cards on their cell phone and use the picture instead of their actual card to check in to our facilities.

31. We’ve had reports that SPAM has been hitting some Chartered Clubs email accounts. We urge everyone to be extremely careful when responding to emails that are soliciting you for money or anything else, even if the email appears to be legitimate.  You can always call us and check first.

32. The deadline for the July 2018 Rec. Center News was this past Friday. The page count will be dropping by 4 pages due to reduced content during the summer.

33. The Stardust Theater Network (sound systems and production software/hardware) has been addressed.

34. The annual cost for DNS blocks on our website is increasing. We recommend continuing to use these blocks which prevents those using Rec. Centers wi-fi connections from accessing adult, gambling and other similar sites while on Rec. Centers’ properties.

Library:

35. Travel Like You Have a Fortune Without Spending One! Tomorrow, June 5 at 10 a.m. in the Social Hall, author Rick Brown will present tips for not only saving hundreds of dollars on trips but also how to receive the best service for the best price.  Tickets are not required for this program.  Copies of Brown’s book “Kiss My Baggage Fees!  How to be a Savvy Travel Hacker” will be available for purchase at the venue.

36. The Summer Reading Club begins tomorrow, Tuesday, June 5 and will run for 14 weeks. Participants may select from all R. H. Johnson Library print books, CD audiobooks, eBooks, and digital audiobooks.  In addition to drawings for a variety of fun prizes and gift certificates, those who participate a minimum of eight weeks will receive a coupon for one free $1 book at the Friends of the Library Book Sale on November 10.  Once again, club members may recommend books they especially enjoyed and these cards will be posted on a bulletin board at the library.  This is a very popular feature that is enjoyed by all library patrons.

37. All residents are invited to join the R. H. Johnson Library Summer Puzzlers as they tackle the newest world’s largest jigsaw puzzle, “Memorable Disney Moments” by Ravensburger containing 40,320 pieces. The fun begins at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6 and continues during normal library hours (9 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday) until the puzzle is completed.  People may participate for as much or as little time as they wish.

38. Virtual Reality Sessions will be offered on Friday June 8 to preregistered library patrons.

Financial Services:

39. Tony and the Accounting group continue working on Payroll/HR/Tracking System software and several other projects that are ongoing.

Golf Operations:

40. Golf revenue for May was was up $1,300 vs. prior year and rounds were up 11 compared to the same time last year. We are up $140,000 and 2,500 rounds year to date.

41. The Golf Operations offices will be remodeled in July. Staff will be located at Stardust Golf Course during that time while the course is closed for summer maintenance.

42. Staff is working with one of our beverage distributors who is looking to sponsor two golf tournaments at our courses.

43. We will be offering a Summer Special Value-Added feature for Super Twilight Golf after 2:30 p.m. for the month of June.  The cost for this is $23 which includes the greens fee,  half a cart and a sleeve of Bridgestone golf balls.

Environmental Services:

44. Deer Valley Golf Course reopens today. Desert Trails Golf Course closes Thursday for maintenance.

45. Stardust Golf Course closed for summer maintenance on Monday, May 28 and will reopen after overseeding on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Bunker maintenance begins this week.

46. We’ve already removed most of the old plantings along the bottom of the RHJ Parking Lot on R. H. Johnson Blvd. to make way for new landscaping.

47. Our Landscaping Dept. will be starting our annual tree trimming program to get ready and stay ahead of monsoon season.

Human Resources:

48. The Drug Prescription Policy for our current Workman’s Compensation Carrier has a new rule requiring the doctor’s prescriptions to go from the pharmacist to the Workman’s Comp. company nurse for approval before the pharmacist can release the prescription to the injured employee. This is taking anywhere from 1 to 4 days on average and has taken 7 days on one particular case for back injury which we don’t think is acceptable.  We may have to reconsider our workman’s Compensation Carrier in the future.

Mon June 11 July 9, & Aug 13           Beat the heat with cool Summer Series acts. With summer around the corner, it is time to find some fun, indoor events and the Recreation Centers of Sun City West has just the answer – the 2018 Summer Series. This year, the Summer Series will move to the Palm Ridge Rec Center, 13800 Deer Valley Drive. Series subscriptions are $21 per person and are on sale at suncitywest.com or at the R.H. Johnson Box Office, 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd. Individual event tickets are $10 and will be on sale beginning Tuesday, May 8. There will be no ticket refunds or exchanges. All shows are open to the public and begin at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

JUNE 11 A Little Help from My Friends – Beatles Cover “With A Little Help from My Friends” is a three-piece group performing a long list of your favorite Beatles songs, with all the bands wonderful harmonies. The group features three local Sun City West residents. Join Linda Marman, Ellie Chaffee, and Tim Polizzi for a trip down Beatles memory lane. You’ll hear early songs from “Meet the Beatles,” to “Rubber Soul” and “Sgt. Peppers,” all the way through “Abbey Road.” Tim has been featured as a guitarist, pianist and vocalist with several rock bands in California and Arizona. He’s been a Beatles fan since they first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. After relocating from California, he has been a Sun City West resident for the past six years. Ellie Chaffee has been singing as long as she can remember in folk groups, choirs, wedding bands, and community theater musicals. A former teacher from Illinois, she is now a full-time Sun City West resident. After moving to Sun City West from Colorado, Linda Marman has continued in her musical pursuits as a member of several local groups. In addition to performing as a vocalist, she plays a variety of musical instruments including piano, guitar, mandolin and clarinet.

JULY 9 C Steve Music – Johnny Cash Tribute This 90-minute show opens with the distinct reminiscent “Boom Chicka Boom” sound as the rich, soulful, baritone vocal delivers the most identifiable Johnny Cash Song, “Folsom Prison Blues.” Your guests will be instantly captivated! They will yearn for more as the magical story about the greatest entertainer of the 20th century is about to unfold in song, recitation, humor and narrative. Crowd encouragement is the main priority as the presentation evolves performing more unmistakable No. 1 hit songs such as “Daddy Sang Bass” and “Ring of Fire.” Steve and Ken guarantee to deliver their tribute show in the most memorable possible way, using drums, upright bass, rhythm guitar and telecaster lead guitar. This show has had many sold-out performances and plenty of record-setting attendance to its credit. Many folks say: “If you close your eyes you would swear Johnny Cash was singing” or “I wasn’t really a Johnny Cash fan, but now I am!” From corporate shows in Albuquerque, N.M., to Cheyenne, Wyo., and the countless private shows and public gatherings of over 1,200 people at one time or another, this family entertainment show is a winner. AUG. 13 MacDougal Street West A Peter, Paul & Mary Experience MacDougal Street West: the sounds of Greenwich Village now. They are a Peter, Paul and Mary tribute band for larger venues and for local performances. Our band members consist of Ron Skelton, Mary Alberts, Rick Shore and Bill Rice. The new flowering of a vibrant musical tradition was rooted in Greenwich Village of the early 1960s. Now legendary folk singers and songwriters of that era could first be heard nightly in the cafes stretching along fabled MacDougal Street. Today great folk still lives on in MacDougal Street West. The urban vibe of Greenwich Village emanates now from Arizona and elicits memories of exciting times past and hopes for brighter days ahead. Ron Skelton: Guitar, vocals – Hailing from Lancaster, Calif., Ron loved music performance from an early age. He has been singing and performing with his guitar since his high school days. Coupling with that his experience of barbershop quartet harmonies has made Ron a polished group or solo performer. Mary Alberts: Vocals – Having grown up in the ’60s, Mary Alberts finds particular joy in keeping alive the good vibe of one of her musical heroes, Mary Travers. You can hear and see the affinity between them in the contemporary Mary’s contributions to MacDougal Street West performances. A similar warmth of tone and personality with the original Mary helps listeners harken back to the halcyon days of the Peter, Paul, and Mary experience. Rick Shore: Guitar, vocals – In 1962, Peter, Paul and Mary’s first album was released. After the album, 11-year old Rick asked if he could learn to play guitar and hasn’t stopped learning and playing. From junior high through college, Rick has been in groups that feature his favorite sounds: PPM, Kingston Trio, Beach Boys, Hollies, Buffalo Springfield and CSNY. Bill Rice: Bass, guitar – Bill was born and raised in the “badlands” of eastern Montana, but headed south to Texas in ‘76. He played in several bands in and around Austin for years, finally arriving in Prescott in 1999.

Wed July 4                                          Patriotic tunes fill the air July 4. The Recreation Centers of Sun City West is happy to present a Fourth of July Show at 1 p.m. July 4 at Palm Ridge Rec Center, 13800 W. Deer Valley Road. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. The show is free to Sun City West residents – two tickets per rec card – and are available at the R.H Johnson Box Office, 19803 N R H Johnson Blvd. The Fourth of July Show will be          a medley of An American Journey in Song. We will combine performances of the vocal talents of The Arizona Singers with the sounds of Clark and Ellie Chaffee’s Swing Time Quintet with guest artist Dan Reed.

Thurs July 19 & Aug 9                        Sizzling summer specials heat up in Lecture Hall. Join the Recreation Centers of Sun City West for a new format of shows that will be offered in the Lecture Hall in the July and August as part of our Sizzling Summer Specials. First up will be T.A. Burrows who will perform his “Legends of Song” at 1 and 3 p.m. Thursday, July 19, followed by The Kehlers on Thursday, Aug. 9, both in the Lecture Hall. Tickets for both shows are available online at suncitywest.com or at the Box Office, 19803 N R.H. Johnson Blvd., for the low price of $5. All seats are general admission. Doors will open at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. for each show.

                                                            Thursday, August 9 The Kehlers. The Kehlers’ singing and playing style will make your toes tap and your ears smile! For 43 years, Steve and Darlene have been entertaining audiences with a large repertoire of country, folk, bluegrass and gospel favorites. Steve boasts a unique, folksy voice and is a natural on the harmonica, acoustic guitar and mandolin. Darlene accompanies him on bass guitar (she is the only performing female bass player in Sun City West)! The Kehlers are pleased to be joined by guest performer Frank Menolascino on electric guitar.
