The Recreation Centers of Sun City West has canceled its lineup of fall special events as COVID-19 uncertainty continues to plague the state.
Although Arizona’s statistics regarding COVID have been trending in an encouraging direction, RCSCW’s Special Events staff had to make decisions now regarding entertainment and down payments for the fall season. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey still has a statewide mandate in order prohibiting gatherings of more than 50 people, even with physical distancing.
The following is a list of events that have been canceled:
- Fall Fest (Nov. 5, Sixtiesmania; and Nov. 6, HIFI). This event will not be rescheduled. Refunds will be issued. Those who have tickets can expect a call from the Events Team in the near future.
- Concerts in the Park (Oct. 3, Faded Jeans; Oct. 10, Rhythm Edition; and Oct. 17, Johnny K & Kompany)
- Movies in the Park (Oct. 4, Jo Jo Rabbit); Oct. 11 (Midway); and Oct. 18, Knives Out. Staff is working on the possibility of planning some drive-in movies. Stay tuned for details!
- Halloween Dance: Oct. 30, Thaddeus Rose
- Holiday Show: Dec. 9, Gothard Sisters
- New Year’s Eve: Dec. 31, Faded Jeans
- November’s Fall Arts and Crafts Fair and the Friends of the Library Book Sale also have been canceled.
Members are reminded that the Rec Center News went to press before some of these cancelations were made, so old information may appear there. The Curbside Christmas event has not been canceled and is proceeding as planned.

What a shame. I was hoping that at least the outdoor events would be able to be held, with some social distancing accomodations. I’m sure you considered all the scenarios, and tried your best to find a way to hold some of the events. Thanks for keeping us safe.
Please leave the outdoor pools open. Also, guess our clubs cannot meet even outdoors??? Very frustrating for sure.
Please take a month at a time to decide about cancellations. It is hard to accept with knowing that Covid has a 98.9% recovery rate. Everyone seems to be so fast in getting on the bandwagon of cancelling everything. Our numbers are
high to fake testing. When you can talk to dozens upon dozens of people getting calls that their tests are positive when they didn’t even take a test. Something seems very dishonest and controlling. Please keep in mind that we all have freedoms which have been totally taken away from us….very very sad. It’s always easier to just cancel than try to work with the SCW residents. We didn’t have complete shutdowns when we dealt with the huge epidemic of the swine flu in 2015. Those death rates were much higher than with Covid!
As the announcement indicated, decisions had to be made because of down payments for the entertainment. This can’t be done on a month-to-month basis. Although I love the outdoor concerts, I, for one, appreciate all the hard decisions being made in the name of safety.
I agree with Betty Cook. Stop canceling everything! Let us make our own decisions about going to these events. We’re tired of being told what to do. If people want to wear s mask outside, fine. If not, that’s fine, too. In the words of an infectious disease doctor from a prominent university, “Disease won’t stop spreading until the wind stops blowing, and that is never going to happen.”
I agree with Bettie Cook…. we are taking this covid-19 too far in losing our freedoms and Independence.
You have GOT to be kidding… How can you sit in your apparent ivory towers and do this to the residents of SCW. What an absolutely ignorant thing to do. There is no reason that the citizens can not choose their risk level. The Covid numbers are down. There is always going to be some risk about living life. Let us choose the amount of risk we feel comfortable with. You are killing our citizens and city. People are choosing to move or not to return at all. Why would they? Because they can choose a community that isn’t run by Chicken Little. Stop IT!!!!!!!
Yes, covid is a bad actor, yes it has killed many.
However, let’s look at the numbers realistically, in Az we have approximately 7.2 million people. Of those approximately 4700 have passed from covid. That is .065%. Notice please that it is not even 1% of our population. By being aware of how this virus spreads, we have been able to control the spread. The virus is weakening. We have better feasting and treatments.
Don’t do this to us. Let us live.
Why would we not have at least kept the outdoor activities. This is a bit of overkill thus far out.
I am a dues paying resident and because of that standing I insist on knowing the names of those SCW recreation board members who voted for this uneducated ruling. I think we have a right to know the names. I will never vote for a board member who voted for this and I will help find someone to replace him. Also I want the names of the salaried SCW recreation persons who are paid from our outrageous dues made public. I will work tirelessly to have them fired. One more thing thing to the ignorant person who wrote this. Just a hint sweetheart. New Years Eve is NOT considered to be FALL.
I agree. Some residents are not afraid to live. It is worse dying at home unstimulated.
THANKS FOR HELPING US STAY SAFE.
Since you are cancelling New Years Eve December 31,2020 What is the Board going to do about the Top Hat Concert Series that begins on January 7, 2021, one week after New Years Eve Dec. 31, 2020? When will decisions be made on the Winter Concert Series, and possible refunds ??
I agree with Marsha Greenwell & Pamela Briggs. Time to get off your high horses and open everything up. At age 55 and over we are all ADULTS. Time to stop treating this community and it’s residents like children. All of the mandates made by the Governor are MANDATES, NOT LAWS. We have now lost nearly a half a year of using our recreation facilities. Yet, in your incompetent mentality, you chose to raise our Rec. Fees 3.54%. For what reason, may I ask. I asked that question before and was given the excuse of the increase of employee wages, etc., etc. What happened to the $2.1 million PPE which, according to the Independent News, was awarded to RCSCW. Canceling EVERYTHING until the end of the year is absolutely ridiculous. Why not take it a little at a time as one person suggested. If we hadn’t already paid our dues in May, after this announcement, I think we would have waited until you got this entire fiasco straitened out. If people are afraid to mingle….then let them make their own decision to stay away from events. Those of use who want to live our lives normally should be able to make our own decisions.
Thank you, Judy. Absolutely the truth. We’re being treated as if we’re not capable of making our own good decisions, and I have no doubt some of these overbearing restrictions have been instituted to shield the Rec Center from liability. Our GM wasn’t hired to keep us safe from anything. His job is to run this community to the benefit of the residents, not to make himself appear to be a hero. We’re sick of this now.
That “Thank you for keeping us safe!” silliness commentary has grown old.
It is a shame that some of the people in our community are not taking this virus seriously. We have lost two friends this past couple of weeks to Covid. We don’t want to lose any more. It is not a joke, and the Rec Center staff and board are doing their best to keep us safe. They are listening to the guidelines. We are all frustrated, but don’t take it out on the people that are doing their best. They deserve better from us. Our whole country is being effected, not just our little world. I thank them for the hard job that they have in these trying times.
Linda, We deserve better from them.
