Update as of 3 p.m. June 26: Members, thank you for your patience as we investigated the issues with the filtration and backwash at the RH Johnson Pool today. At this time, we will be keeping the pool closed tomorrow, Thursday, and will evaluate it after that on a day-by-day basis. Today, during the closure, we were able to open and clean out four of the six filters. We will do the other two tomorrow. Part of that process includes mixing up the filtration media, and backwashing, which is causing sediment to flow back into the pool. This will occur again tomorrow as we finish the last two filters. After the filters have had time to work, we will evaluate whether the clarity of the pool has improved enough to reopen. In the meantime, we are awaiting parts and will schedule the replacement of the filtration media and backwash mechanisms as soon as possible. Keep an eye on our social media for all the latest.
The Rec Centers will be closing the RH Johnson Pool on Wednesday, June 26, to evaluate the filtration system in its entirety.
Water at the pool has been cloudy in recent days, although the pool chemistry is still in the appropriate range and does not pose a health hazard. The closure will allow staff to work with its pool specialists and closely examine the complete filtration system.
Staff already has determined the filtering media needs to be replaced as the filters are not operating at optimum efficiency. The new filtration media and appropriate filtration components are being ordered.
An additional issue with the backwashing components on Tuesday led to the closure.
Staff is inviting the Maricopa County inspector out during the closure as an additional resource.
Reopening will be determined after evaluation of the new backwashing issue. The filtration repairs and replacement will be scheduled as soon as possible.
Stay tuned to suncitywest.com and the Rec Centers’ social media for all the latest on this closure.
Obviously this has to do with the defective pool decking gravel getting into the filtration system. Repair of that should take priority over the Palm Ridge pool
Probably plugged from topping shed
Thanks again for making health and safety for water pathogens a top priority! I appreciate your detailed attention to this and one of the many reasons we do enjoy living here in SCW!
Wow ! 2 of the 3 outdoor pools closed ? In the Heat of the summer ? We realize Palm Ridge was a planned renovation,
So, R.H. Johnson pool takes on even more people. We’ve been aware of the fact that R.H. Johnson resurface is sloughing off, Which you would think would be a “Red Flag” that this stuff is getting into the pool ? Maybe we need to Check/ Clean filtration system much more frequently ?? Yet seems like we are totally caught by surprise… And now it’s being treated like it’s No Big Deal ?
This is a Very Big Deal !
This is a Big Deal to those of us who still work & rely on the outdoor pools, daily to cool off when we get home ! Especially this time of year, it’s not just recreation, it’s necessary !
A sense of urgency would also be appreciated, after all this is what we pay for, as our dues continue to go up and up.!!
Is the pool open on July 4, 2024?
Thanks for taking care of it, and the excellent communication! We appreciate the hard work, and hope you don’t have to deal with too many complaints.
I have been to Johnson pool once since the new decking it’s stuck to the bottom of my feet and it was in my shoes out in the parking lot. What a shotty job and you still can’t walk on it barefooted so why was it done to begin with such a shame.
Many years ago when using the pool I noticed alot of bunches of long hair floating in the pool by the filters so there was a problem then that was not addressed properly. Yuk
People have been telling the administration about the bad deck at RH. The company that put it down has been out and it should have been fixed right away. Every time you get in the pool, the little beads go in the water. Our dues have been raised every year we have lived here except the year of the pandemic. I think the company that is redoing the deck should have to pay for the replacements of all the filters and any labor fees to put them in.
Sun screen should be banned in the pool area. Many pools I have visited are doing this as people are applying it and immediately going into the water where it rinses off causing damage to pool surfaces and filtration systems
As a new resident of SCW, I don’t know much about the history of the pool issues but I do appreciate the attention being given to health and safety. It’s unfortunately a bad time of year for repairs but it is what it is and it’s not the end of the world. Looking forward to a long hot summer enjoying the upgraded pools here in SCW.
Thanks!
