The Recreation Centers of Sun City West would like to make members aware of two projects coming up at the RH Johnson Pool and Spa.

The spa will be closed Tuesday, June 4, to replace sprinkler heads that are part of the fire alarm system. The sprinkler heads are functioning but old and need to be replaced. The closure will be June 4 only.

Repairs to the RH Johnson Pool deck also will be required, although the date for that work has not yet been scheduled. The deck surface, which was put in place 9 months ago, is failing early due to a problem with the resin used in the rubber mixture.

Rec Centers’ staff worked closely with the installing vendor, Rubcorp, to determine the cause of the failure and to ensure RCSCW would not be financially responsible for the repairs. Those answers came this week. Rubcorp determined the binder formulation used when installing the rubber coating caused the failure. That formulation had been modified from what the vendor normally uses. As a result, the Rec Centers will not have to cover any repair costs.

Installations of the same product with the original binder formulation have held up very well in other communities, including those in Arizona and Las Vegas with similar summer temperatures.

Rubcorp will install a new surfacing system to replace the current surface in Sun City West. As soon as the work is scheduled, the Rec Centers will put out additional information for members.
