The R.H. Johnson Library and Friends of the R.H. Johnson Library are partnering with Banner Sun Health Research Institute on two upcoming events to discuss Alzheimer’s disease and provide an opportunity to be pre-screened for clinical trials related to the disease.

Seating at the lectures is limited, as are appointments in the mobile screening unit, so registration is required for all activities.

For the first lecture, Dr. De Santiago from the Banner Sun Health Research Institute will present “Overview of Diagnosis, Treatment and Progression of Alzheimer’s Disease” at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, in the Lecture Hall.

Dr. De Santiago will touch on early warning signs of cognitive decline, when to seek medical care, and what to expect from a cognitive evaluation. She will clarify terminology, including the difference between “Alzheimer’s” and “dementia”. She will also briefly touch on Alzheimer’s progression, treatment options, and currently enrolling clinical trials.

This is a free event, but registration is required and can be made online at suncitywest.librarycalendar.com. For assistance with registering, call the Library’s Data Resource Center at 623-544-6644. Registration reserves a seat until the start of the event, after which walk-ins will be welcomed. Entry after start time is subject to seat availability.

November’s event will be in two parts:

Nov. 19: At 2 p.m. in the Lecture Hall, Banner will provide an educational presentation about its Traveller Mobile Research Unit, which will be onsite for tours after the lecture. The mobile unit features state-of-the-art prescreening services and technologies. Those interested in clinical trial pre-screenings must make an appointment, in person, at the Nov. 19 event. The screening appointments will be offered on Nov. 20 or 21.

Nov. 20-21: Clinical trial prescreening appointments will be conducted by Global Alzheimer’s Platform (GAP) in collaboration with Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and Banner Sun Health Research Institute staff. The Mobile Research Unit will be positioned in the library parking lot for participant convenience.

Registration is required to attend this program.

Important Notes:

  • Online registration secures your seat until event commencement.
  • Late arrivals will be accommodated based on available seating.
  • Prescreening appointments for Nov. 20-21 must be scheduled in person on Nov. 19.

We encourage community members interested in advancing Alzheimer’s research to attend this informative session and learn about opportunities to contribute to groundbreaking clinical studies.
