Subject: Weekly Activity Report – October 02, 2017
Facility Projects:
- The sealing and striping of Stardust Parking Lot was completed on 10/02/17.
- We expect the Desert Trail Pro Shop Remodel Project to be completed by Friday. October 6. 2107.
- The sealing and striping of the Kuentz parking Lot 2 was completed September 25, 2017.
- The installation of Pro Shop energy efficient lighting to improve Pro Shop parking lot safety begins this week and includes Deer Valley, Echo Mesa and Pebblebrook.
Facility Maintenance:
- H. Johnson Spa project is completed and filled with water. The filtration system is not working properly due to the old sand in the filter which has hardened. It will be cleaned out and replaced with new sand.
- We are waiting for new parts for the R.H. Johnson Spa Heating unit to satisfy the findings of the Boiler Inspector who last inspected the unit.
- The Library Air Conditioning Unit will be replaced this coming weekend.
Recreation:
- Join us for our Free Concert in the Park on Saturday, October 7 featuring classic rock band “A Touch of Gray”. Concessions start at 5 p.m. and includes brats, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, beverages, popcorn and ice cream.
- 325 attended our last Movie in the Park. Our next movie, “Sully” is scheduled for Sunday, October 8 at sundown.
Sports Pavilion:
- Sunday’s Special brought in $449.
- To date we have 57 entries into the Lona King Bowling Tournament scheduled for Oct. 7 & 8.
Library:
- The library’s Open House was on Friday, September 29 and was well received. Many people were curious about the Virtual Reality sessions and registered to give it a try.
- The winter season has just started at the Library and with that all winter activities resume as we enter the new season. These include the monthly Chat with Local Authors, the Halloween Story Time and Parade, Medicare in 2018, five book discussion groups, the Writer’s Group, the Poetry Group, and several New York Times Bestselling Author Book Talks and Signings.
Village Store:
- Village Store sales were at a 28% increase this year over the same time period last year.
- The Village Store continues to work with Clubs regarding new space available for the Fall Arts and Crafts Fair. Leather Carvers has agreed to occupy the new courtyard space for the upcoming Fall Crafts Fair.
Environmental Services:
- Grandviw, Trail Ridge, Stardust and Desert Trails Golf Courses have all been overseeded and are expected to reopen on Tuesday, October 17
- The Ball Park closed on Wednesday, 9-20 for overseeding. We reopen on Monday, Oct. 16.
- We closed half of the small Dog Park (First Section) for overseeding 9-28. The second half on the dog park closes Wed., Oct. 18 and the outside lawn Dog Park closes Thursday, Oct. 5. The ARC Building lawn will be overseeded Monday, Oct. 2. The lawns at Palm Ridge will be overseeded during the 2nd week of October.
- The new pool lawn will be overseeded sometime in mid-October.
- We are making repairs to a water pump that went down on Trial Ridge Golf Course over the weekend. We can divert water from another source to take care of Trail Ridge watering needs until the pump is back up and working.
- We continue to work on the RH Johnson Project Landscaping. Irrigation lines have been installed for the eight additional trees. The installation of electrical lines for tree lighting have also been installed. We continue laying down the Rip Rap (rock) behind the Social Hall. Additional plants and flowers have been ordered and should be delivered in about 2 weeks.
- We ordered a new parking lot sweeper, refurbished, to take care of blown debris in our parking lots. This equipment will be a major savings on our resources and time as we currently use two men, blowers and brooms to keep the parking lots clean.
Golf Operations:
- Golf revenue and rounds were down for the month of September ($14,000) and 800 rounds. We are hoping the cooler and beautiful weather will change this trend.
- We hired 7 PA’s to replace those that left and to increase the number of PA positions on staff.
Financial Services:
- The Draft Reserve Study Report was received on Friday. Tony is reconciling the report before it is finalized. The new software being used for this report allows for more flexibility and the ability to edit information as necessary.
- Our Reserves are 72% funded which is greater than last year at 64%.
- We will be reviewing how to post after hours emergency contact information at the different facilities. We provide updated Emergency Callback Lists to the Posse however, the Posse has recently changed their operating hours. Denise has sent an email to Captain Chagolla of the Sheriff’s Office asking for his input on how best to accomplish this.

Every Saturday CONCERT IN THE PARK! 7 pm, Beardsley Park. Bring your own chair. Concessions start at 5 pm and include brats, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, beverages, popcorn and ice cream. This event is FREE!
Oct 7: A Touch of Gray : A Touch of Gray is a classic rock band made up of baby boomers who live in the Vistancia area of Peoria, AZ. Bringing their musical talents together, the band combined influences from Detroit, Chicago and California with backgrounds in rock as well as classical music. A Touch of Gray play songs in a variety of genres: rock, jazz, blues, country – all designed for your listening and dancing pleasure.
Oct 14: Johnny K and Kompany:. He is a self-taught singer, he has starred in shows with: JD’s Legendary Stars, Stars on 45, The Rags Allen Trio and DJ’s Old School Stars – perfecting the standards and great music of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Johnny brings all this experience to his current role as lead singer of Johnny K and Kompany.
Oct 21: 5 In The Wheel: 5 in the Wheel Band plays dance music. They specialize in new Country and Classic Rock providing a little something for everyone in the crowd. While the band has opened for such acts as the Wall Flowers and has had Frank Zappas’ talented sister Candy, join them on stage performing, their greatest pleasure comes from playing for the dancers.
Oct 28: The Newtones : Formerly known as the “Realtones”. This group has played for SCW audiences and always has a great reponse. This 5 piece band The NewTones deliver a variety of songs that vary from up tempo favorites to slow dance ballads and cater to requests for all dance styles

The Jan Petrie Band is a local favorite and offers Rock and Roll Music from the 50”s, 60”s and 70”s.
Sat Oct 28 RH JOHNSON CHARTERED CLUBS OPEN HOUSE…Join us on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 10 am to Noon for our RH Johnson Chartered Clubs Open House.
Come out and visit with the clubs that use this facility. They will be located in the RHJ Courtyard and in their Club Rooms. The Automobile Restoration Club (ARC) and the RV Club will have classic cars and RVs in the parking lot in a blocked off area in front near the entrance to the courtyard. We will have the exercise and dance clubs performing on a stage. You will have an opportunity to see the new pool and surrounding area from the courtyard.

Just wondering about the two fountains in the Johnson Pool. Someone said the pump or pumps are not working that make the water fountains work. I am guessing whatever broke is under warranty. Do you know when they will be fixed and will the water standing inside the fountain “bowls” be cleaned or have bleach put in them so there is no stagnant water going into the pool when the water is turned on and goes into the pool? Also, what has happened to the large flower containers in front of the entrance to the pool? Cracking?? Thanks in advance for your input.
Hello Barb, yes, the large pump that runs the fountains in the pool did break and yes, it is under warranty. The estimate on repair is a few weeks and in the meantime, Facilities Maintenance is adding chlorine to the fountain wells. As far as the planters out front, some cracking is normal, but unfortunately it doesn’t help when cars hit them, which has happened four times thus far (that we know of). As of now there are no plans to replace the planters, but staff is going to take a closer look at them this afternoon to evaluate. Thank you for your questions!
Hi again Barb. We just spoke to Todd Patty, and after further inspection as well as discussion with the contractor, those planters outside the pool entrance at RHJ will be replaced. While they’re expected to get hairline cracks, these were more extreme than first thought. The new planters should be in place within a month or so, they are on order. Have a great day.
