Friends of the Library Lecture

The presenter for the Friends of the R. H. Johnson Library lecture for November is Fred Cone, a member of our community and a 30-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps awarded the distinguished Navy Cross. He was a combat pilot in Vietnam and will talk about some of the aviation tactics used in Vietnam and some of his experience as a pilot. Thank you to all the many veterans in our community for your service.

US Navy Cross military award

Fred Cone joined United States Marine Corps in 1956. During his military career, Fred flew 21 different types of aircraft and amassed over 8600 flight hours, including 1000 hours of combat flying.

He commanded 7 different units during his career reaching the rank of Colonel. In 1986 Fred was sent to create the Naval ROTC program at the University of Arizona. His military awards include; the Navy Cross, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal.

Fred obtained degrees in Aeronautical Engineering, an MBA, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Arizona. He was a professor in the Air Science Department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona for 35 years. During this time, he has worked as a coach of the school’s Flight Team and led them to the National Championship of the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (FIFA) on 3 occasions. He was inducted into the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame in 2007 (pimaair.org).
