Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – March 20, 2017

Projects:

1. Running Construction has completed the second coat of color and has striped the Pickle Ball Courts. All net posts and nets have been set.  Asphalt striping has been completed.  All curbing has been completed.  Wind screens and fence cap will be installed on Tuesday and construction fencing will be removed on Wednesday of this week.  Todd Patty’s Environmental Maintenance crew has started preparation for landscaping.

2. ForeSite Construction is busy constructing block retainer walls at the R. H. Johnson Pool project. Underground pool plumbing is being installed and block construction continues on the storage building and equipment enclosures.

3. Running Construction has completed 98% of the work at the Mediation Garden at Beardsley. Once the temporary signs have been installed, Running Construction will install the sign lighting.  Rotary is working with a sign company for a proposal to manufacture the entry signs that will be installed to the entry paths.  Rotary has requested 12 pavers for engraving which will be delivered today.

4. Precise Signs has completed the installation of the two remaining ID signs for the Village Store and the south end of the Sports Pavilion. We are waiting for a schedule for the installation of the sign lights.

Sports Pavilion:

5. Our Sunday Special brought in $679 in revenue and Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $236.

Recreation:

6. Tickets are on sale for the Westernaires and Rhythm Tappers events. Tickets for the Westernaires Show can be purchased for April 6 (2 p.m.), April 7 and 8 (7 p.m.) and April 9 (2 p.m.).  Tickets for the Rhythm Tappers Show can be purchased for Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22 (7 p.m. and Sunday, April 23 (2 p.m.).

7. Our next Jam Session is scheduled for Monday, March 27 from 1 – 3 pm in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join us for two hours of entertainment.

8. 300 people braved the 95 degree temperatures last Wednesday to listen to the Sun Cities Pops Band. They did not disappoint.

9. Join us for our next So You Think You Have Talent in the Kuentz Courtyard on Tuesday, Mar. 21 at 11:00 am for a 90-minute Beatles Tribute “With a Little Help From My Friends”.

10. Join us for Happy Hour on Wed., Mar. 22 from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Kuentz Courtyard. This event is free and for residents of SCW and their invited guests.  Bring your own beverage and snacks.  Ice and coffee are provided.  Entertainment is provided by “Back in Time”.

11. We are in our second week of Happy Camp. There are many activities scheduled for visiting grandchildren to participate in.

12. Thursday, March 23, enjoy the sounds of “West Valley Winds” at Beardsley Park, 5 pm. The band is sponsored by the Valley View Food Bank.  They perform concerts in the west valley area, seeking donations of funds to cover the costs of the band’s operation and to collect non-perishable food items for the food bank.

13. Tickets to next year’s Top Hat Series went on sale March 14th. Tickets for these events were available on-line for the first time.  900 series tickets were sold in one day.  Cruise Ship Series Tickets go on sale Tuesday, March 21 and will also be available on-line.

14. We are currently considering a proposal to host the World Team Pickle Ball Tournament in December.

Library:

15. There are Happy Camp activities at the R. H. Johnson Library last Wednesday, March 15. Approximately 30 children plus parents and grandparents.  Stories were read by Library staff, the Humane Society brought a ferret and a rat for the kids to see and the Red Hot Clowns painted the kids’ faces.  Happy Camp returns at the Library this Wednesday.

16. Best-selling author Linda Castillo was at the Stardust Theater last Friday, March 17. 70 people attended this event.

17. Author J. A. Jance will speak at the Social Hall on Thursday, March 23 at 10 a.m.

18. Friends of the Library present “AARP Fraud Watch” at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 27 in the Lecture Hall. All are welcome to attend.

Village Store:

19. The Spring Arts and Crafts Fair went off without a hitch! Those responsible for the Fair have stated that this Fair was the most easily run, issue-free Fair we’ve had to date.  Thanks go out to all the dedicated staff and volunteers for this achievement.  We couldn’t have done it without you.  Fair statistics will be made available as they are reported to us.

Environemntal Services:

20. Spring aerification begins next week at the Lawn Bowls Courts.

21. Golf Maintenance employees are busy preparing for several upcoming tournaments, The Sun City West Classic (3/25 & 3/26), the Sun City/Sun City West Tournament and in April the Tin Cup Tournament.

22. Landscape Maintenance will begin installing plantings at the new Pickle Ball Courts this week. We are planning the Grand Opening for the evening of April 7, 2017.

General Services:

23. On-Line voting began, March 13 at 8 am and goes through Mar 23. As of this morning 1,787 votes were cast on line which is approximately 18% of those emails collected for the purposes of on-line voting. Voting in person on election day, March 27, is from 8 am to 5 pm at the Data Resource Center (north entrance).  Please remember to bring your Rec. Card or Key Fob if voting in person.

24. The deadline for the Rec. Center News is April 7, 2017. Please have all items for publication submitted by noon.

Golf Operations:

25. Golf Revenue is up $2,600 over prior year through March 18 and down 300 rounds vs. prior year. Range revenue is up $54,000 since October due to the 949 debit keys sold and the increase in range price.

26. Hole in One Challenge went well. We did NOT have a winner on the $500,000 hole in one prize on Saturday at Ehco Mesa Golf Course. In fact, nobody hit the green in the finals from 135 yards.  A recap of the Hole In One challenge will follow on Tuesday, we are hopeful that we were able to raise over $2,000 for the SCW Foundation.

27. The Sun City West Classic, (a two-day event, Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26) will be held at Grandview and Deer Valley Golf Courses. We are hopeful we will have an Executive course flight.  If so, it will be held at Echo Mesa and Stardust.  The entry fee is $30 plus daily greens fees.

Facility Maintenance:

28. A Facility Maintenance Crew was busy painting the front entrance side of the R. H. Johnson Library this morning taking advantage of the Library being closed today.

29. We’ve located and repaired a leak to a hot water line near the sink at the Crooked Putter. The hot water heater will have to be replaced and the wall board will have to be replaced behind the sink.

30. The Beardsley Spa was down for a few hours this morning due to broken motor parts. We were able to locate replacement parts locally and expected to have the pump motor repaired in 2-3 hours.

Financial Services:

31. The first draft of the FY 17/18 Budget has been presented to the B & F Committee.

32. February Financials went out last week.

33. We are doing well with expenses on current FY16/17 budget.

34. An additional printer was installed in Member Services allowing us to now use one to print member cards and the other key cards.

Human Resources:

35. ADA Fair Housing Training has been set up for early April for those employees needing this information in performance of their jobs.

36. As we are a point of dispensing training for Maricopa County and public health emergencies, closed POD training has been set up for Apr. 25 from 8 a.m. to Noon for anyone having gone through Open POD Training. This includes CERT Team Members, First Responders, Rec. Center Management and volunteers.

Management:

37. We are in the process of auditing chartered clubs’ financials. 58 of 100 clubs have been completed.

Every Tue at Kuentz                        SO YOU THINK YOU HAVE TALENT! 11 am at Kuentz Courtyard.  Join us for our sixth season highlighting many new acts and all of your old favorites! Join us in the Kuentz Courtyard starting at 11 a.m. Tuesdays for an hour of fun.  Our lineup for January is:

March 21 – With a Little Help from my Friends (Beatles Tribute). This is a 90-minute show.

March 28 – Singer Marilyn McClenahan with Divas and Demons (new)

Mon  Mar  27                                     JAM SESSION,  1-3 pm, Kuentz Courtyard. Join us from 1 to 3 p.m. for two hours of entertainment in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join in or just sit back and relax and enjoy the music. This starts our third season. If you play a string instrument or other similar instruments join in on the fun. We supply sound and chairs for the musicians. This is open to SCW residents and guests. For questions or information, contact Dori Miller at 623- 544-6193.

March 22 Back in Time

Thu Mar 23                                       WEST VALLEY WINDS, 5 pm, Beardsley Park, Its free, bring your own chair!.  Concessions will be on hand, including hamburgers, hot dogs and brats.  West Valley Wind Ensemble began more than 30 years ago when a group of musicians led by Walter Moeck, got together to read and play music in Sun City West. In 2014, the group moved its rehearsals to Sun City at the Valley View Food Bank. The Food Bank’s sponsorship enabled the band to become an Arizona incorporated nonprofit organization. The band continues to have a strong relationship and commitment to Valley View Food Bank. The West Valley Wind Ensemble gives concerts in the West Valley area, seeking donations of funds to cover costs of the band’s operation and non-perishable food items for the Food Bank.
