 Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – March 13, 2017

Projects:

1. Running Construction has installed the LED light fixtures on the eight new Pickle Ball courts. Asphalt patching was completed on Friday.  First coat of color has been applied.  Second coat will be applied today.  Curbing is being installed today and Southwest Sports will begin court striping tomorrow.  Asphalt striping will start toward the end of the week.

2. ForeSite Construction has completed the concrete slab at the R. H. Johnson pool lobby area. The remainder of footing around the perimeter of the pool area were poured on Friday.  Masons will be back on site today to set the block walls around the perimeter of the pool area.  Trenching continues for the pool plumbing.

3. Running Construction has completed 98% of the work at the Mediation Garden at Beardsley. Once the temporary signs have been installed, Running Construction will install the sign lighting.  Rotary is working with a sign company for a proposal to manufacture the entry signs that will be installed to the entry paths.  Rotary has requested 12 pavers for engraving which will be delivered today.

4. Precise signs has poured the sign bases for the two remaining signs at the south entry to the Sports Pavilion and the Village Store area. We are waiting on an installation schedule for those two signs.

Sports Pavilion:

5. Our Sunday Special brought in $679 in revenue and Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $236.

6. We recorded our twenty-first 300 game bowled at Johnson Lanes – Congratulations go out to Carl Doak! Way to go Carl!  As a side note, we must have some excellent bowlers and some really great lanes!  R. H. Johnson Lanes has been recorded as having the most 300 games bowled in a one month period…84.  We lead both Phoenix and the state of Arizona in the number of 300 games for the month of February.  Congratulations go out to Barry and his team at the Sports Pavilion!

Recreation:

7. Tickets are on sale for the Westernaires and Rhythm Tappers events. Tickets for the Westernaires Show can be purchased for April 6 (2 p.m.), April 7 and 8 (7 p.m.) and April 9 (2 p.m.).  Tickets for the Rhythm Tappers Show can be purchased for Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22 (7 p.m. and Sunday, April 23 (2 p.m.).

8. Our next Jam Session is scheduled for Monday, March 27 from 1 – 3 pm in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join us for two hours of entertainment.

9. Join us for our next So You Think You Have Talent in the Kuentz Courtyard on Tuesday, Mar. 14 at 11:00 am.  Entertainment is provided by singer Gale Leach.

10. Join us for Happy Hour on Wed., Mar. 22 from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Kuentz Courtyard. This event is free and for residents of SCW and their invited guests.  Bring your own beverage and snacks.  Ice and coffee are provided.  Entertainment is provided by “Back in Time”.

11. Happy Camp begins today, March 13. We have 37 activities scheduled at Happy Camp for visiting grandchildren with over 200 signed up for the first week.

12. Due to upcoming Spring Break, we are doubling the monitors at our pools during kids swim hours in an effort to maintain a good atmosphere for all.

13. Our “Spring Fest” Concerts on April 10, 11 and 12 were well attended and well received.

14. Attendance at our Saturday, March 11^th “Motors and Meals” event in the R. H. Johnson parking lot was light but this is the first time the event has been held and we expect a better turnout next year. The Automotive Restoration Club (ARC) set up some of their classic cars, eight food trailers and a beer garden in an effort to raise money and promote awareness for Northwest Valley Connect.

15. 35 people have signed up for our Drive-In Movie in the ARC parking lot tonight, March 13. Movie goers will be able to tune in on SCW radio station KSCW-LP 103.1 FM as they watch the movie on the big screen.

16. Tickets to next year’s Top Hat Series go on sale tomorrow, 3/14. Tickets for these events will be available on-line for the first time.  Cruise Ship Series Tickets go on sale Tuesday of next week, March 21 and will also be availble on-line.

17. Join us on Wednesday, March 15 for the Surprise Pops Concert at 2 p.m. in Beardsley Park. This event is free for SCW residents and their invited guests.  Hamburgers, Hotdogs and Brats will be available at the concession stand.  Even though the band keeps the tradition of not charging for the concert they do ask the audience to bring a non-perishable item for donation to the food bank.

18. Saturday is our Spring Craft Fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the R. H. Johnson Center Parking Lot.

19. There are 400 participants in The Fun in the Sun Pickleball Tournament this Monday through Wednesday.

Library:

20. There are Happy Camp activities at the R. H. Johnson Library on Wednesday, March 15. Staff member Mary Galego will entertain Happy Campers reading some stories.  The Humane Society will have some dogs and cats on hand for the kids to see and Red Hot Clowns will provide face painting.

21. Best-selling author Linda Castillo will be at the Stardust Theater on Friday, March 17 at 1:00 pm.

Village Store:

22. February sales at the Village Store came in at $35,421 and if you add the numbers from the Palo Verde Patchers Quilt Show, $9,200 and the Spring Bling Fling $6,518, total sales were $55,539.

23. The Metal Club ran out of security mail boxes. They are training another person to make these to correct this problem.

General Services:

24. On-Line voting begins today, March 13 at 8 am through Mar 23. Voting on election day, March 27, is from 8 am to 5 pm at the Data Resource Center (north entrance). Please remember to bring your Rec. Card or Key Fob if voting in person.

25. The 2017 Spring Session of TORCH Graduation is Thursday, March 16. Congratulations to all!

26. We will be attending a SCW Consortium Meeting on Wednesday of this week.

Golf Operations:

27. Saturday’s golf event for disabled veterans was held at PB Golf Course. 96 golfers participated in this event honoring our veterans.

28. Revenue for March is up $8,600 and 104 rounds over prior year for the same time period.

29. Hole in One International is sponsoring an event from Mar. 13 to Mar. 18 in the afternoon at Echo Mesa Golf Course. For $5.00 participants get 7 golf balls and a chance at winning a half million dollars for getting a hole-in-one.  Proceeds from this event go to the Sun City West Foundation.

30. The Sun City West Classic, a two-day event will be held at the end of March.

Facility Maintenance:

31. We will be covering up the tile library sign over the entranceway of the Library so it can be painted like the rest of the building. If it cannot be completed today for some reason, this project will be complete on the following Monday when the library is closed.

32. The Respirator Certified Fit Test for Facility Maintenance employees went well.

33. The Beardsley Spa was down for a few hours this morning due to broken motor parts. We were able to locate replacement parts locally and expected to have the pump motor repaired in 2-3 hours.

Financial Services:

34. The first draft of the FY 17/18 Budget has been presented to the B & F Committee.

35. Earl and Tony have met with our property and liability insurance agent to discuss next year’s coverage. Initial estimate is that the cost for coverage will go up between 5 – 7%.  We will negotiate to reduce that amount.
36. We expect the February Financials to be out this week.

Human Resources:

37. HR is working to set up ADA and Fair Housing Training for employees needing this information in performance of their jobs.

Management:

38. We are in the process of auditing chartered clubs’ financials. 40 of 100 clubs have been completed.

March 21 – With a Little Help from my Friends (Beatles Tribute). This is a 90-minute show.

March 28 – Singer Marilyn McClenahan with Divas and Demons (new)

Mon  Mar  27                                     JAM SESSION,  1-3 pm, Kuentz Courtyard. Join us on from 1 to 3 p.m. for two hours of entertainment in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join in or just sit back and relax and enjoy the music. This starts our third season. If you play a string instrument or other similar instruments join in on the fun. We supply sound and chairs for the musicians. This is open to SCW residents and guests. For questions or information, contact Dori Miller at 623- 544-6193.

Wed Mar  22                                      HAPPY HOUR, 6-8 pm Kuentz Courtyard.  This event is free and is for residents and their invited guests.  Bring your own beverage and snacks.  Ice and Coffee are provided.  Also bring your own chair

March 22 Back in Time

Wed Mar 15                                       SURPRISE POPS CONCERT,  2 pm, Beardsley Park.  It’s Free, Bring your own Chair!  Hamburgers, hot dogs and brats will be available at the concession stands.  Concessions open at noon. Today the band has grown to about 100 members and plays free concerts to thousands of West Valley audiences every season. The band still keeps the tradition of not charging for a concert. However, they do ask the audience to bring a nonperishable food donation to the concert for the food bank.

Fri Mar 17                                         DUNLAP AND PENNINGTON , 7 pm Palm Ridge Recreation Center.  This event is SOLD OUT!

Sat Mar 18                                         ARTS & CRAFTS FAIR 8 am – 2 pm. RH Johnson Complex. Thousands of one-of-a-kind treasures.  Stop and shop!  See all the beautiful art created by our fellow residents.

Wed Mar 23                                       WEST VALLEY WINDS, 5 pm, Beardsley Park, Its free, bring your own chair!.  Concessions will be on hand, including hamburgers, hot dogs and brats.  West Valley Wind Ensemble began more than 30 years ago when a group of musicians led by Walter Moeck, got together to read and play music in Sun City West. In 2014, the group moved its rehearsals to Sun City at the Valley View Food Bank. The Food Bank’s sponsorship enabled the band to become an Arizona incorporated nonprofit organization. The band continues to have a strong relationship and commitment to Valley View Food Bank. The West Valley Wind Ensemble gives concerts in the West Valley area, seeking donations of funds to cover costs of the band’s operation and non-perishable food items for the Food Bank.
