Facility Projects:

  1. The Beardsley Mini-Golf Turf Replacement Project was completed 3/10/18.

 

  1. The starting of the ARC Paint Booth Project is still pending while we wait on Maricopa County approval of revised Foundation/Steel engineering.

 

  1. H. Johnson Parking Lot 1 Lighting Project at the Library has been completed. We are very pleased with how this project turned out with the updated look and the additional lighting it provides.

 

  1. The RHJ Parking Lot 2 Lighting Project is set to begin 3/19/18 and will take approximately 2 weeks to complete.

 

Facility Maintenance:

  1. On Friday night, half of the park lights went out during the concert. Facility Maintenance Staff checked through the lights the next morning and found a section of faulty wiring.  Staff was able to get almost all of the lights back on before the Saturday night concert.

 

Recreation:

  1. We are preparing for our Happy Camp Event which starts on Monday, March12 and runs through Friday March 30. Bowling will be held every Saturday for our Happy Camp participants!  Please be sure to register all children at the R. H. Johnson Box Office for participation in Happy Camp.

 

  1. A few stats from this weekend’s Spring Fest Concerts: Attendance on Friday night was 2,200 and Saturday night despite the weather was 1,700.  We will provide the numbers for Sunday night’s concerts when they are available.

 

Sports Pavilion:

  1. Sunday’s Special brought in $903.

 

Village Store:

  1. We are ready for our next Spring Arts and Craft Fair which is being held this Saturday, March 17 from 8 am to 2 pm at the R.H. Johnson Facility, rain or shine.

 

  1. Village Store sales for the month of February 2018 were very good in the store and through several big Club events. Sales totals were second only to 2017 numbers.

 

Library:

  1. We will begin distributing complementary tickets to see Best-selling Author C. J. Box, starting with members of the Friends of the Library on Wednesday, March 7. J. Box will sign The Disappeared, the 19th book in his Joe Pickett series, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27 in the Social Hall.

 

  1. Vincent Alascia of the Maricopa County Library District Northwest Regional Library presented his repeat performance of Cut the Cord at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 at the Social Hall. Just under 60 people attended this event.

 

  1. The OverDrive Digital Bookmobile was in the R. H. Johnson Library parking lot on Saturday, March 10, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. It had tablet and computer workstations for browsing the library’s large collection of eBooks and digital audiobooks.  It also had a Gadget Gallery for hands-on experience is using the OverDrive app on many different popular devices. Some patrons brought their own devices for one-on-one assistance from library volunteers.  Library staff entered many first-time patrons into our OverDrive database.

 

  1. Wednesday will be the first Story Time for Happy Camp. After the stories, the children will be treated to a visit from Liberty Wildlife, who will bring live Arizona with them including reptiles.

 

  1. Library Director Jane Kauzlaric reports that the new lights in the library parking lot look great and thanked Karl for a job well done!

 

General Services;

  1. The Our Neighborhood Network (ONN) will be offering a series of speakers on different topics on selected Monday’s. All seminars will be in the SCW Foundation Webb Room at 14465 R. H. Johnson Blvd.  Classes are free but you must call to register (623-207-1703).  Next seminars is:

 

  • Monday, March 19, 9:30 – 11 a.m. – It could Happen to You:  Don’t Leave Your Loved Ones Guessing.

 

  1. Virtual Reality is now a $32 million dollar business and booming. We will continue to offer virtual reality experiences to our members as we go forward.

 

  1. We are planning to have our antiquated phone system change out somewhere around the end of the year.

 

  1. TORCH Graduation takes place on Thursday.

 

  1. Our seminar on Sleep Disorders and how it affects health was packed again.

 

  1. We are in the testing phases of giving our residents the ability to scan their Recreation Cards and use them for accessing the Recreation Centers. This service will not be available at the Library as they use different software.

 

Financial Services:

  1. Tony continues gathering information from staff to finish up the GM’s Proposed FY 18/19 Budget which will be presented to B&F Committee and the Governing Board.

 

Golf Operations:

  1. Golf revenue from March 1st through March 10th is up 6.7% over prior year and up 2% in rounds over prior year.

 

  1. March 10th Senior Olympics had an 8 am shotgun at Grandview.  44 players participated with  around 10 of them qualifying for the National event in Albuquerque in August 2019.

 

  1. Camp Corral (Disabled Vet Foundation) had an 8 am shotgun at Pebblebrook on Saturday. 108 players participated in this event and funds were raised to send children of Vets to camp.

 

  1. The Canadian-American Challenge was held at Pebblebrook Golf Course on Sunday March 11 with an 8 a.m. shotgun. 60 players teed off with the Americans winning the event 108 points vs. 144 points.

 

  1. This year’s Million Dollar Hole-In-One event will be held March 14 –   The Million Dollar Hole-In-One Contest will be held daily at Echo Mesa GC driving range and is sponsored by Desert Golf Cars.  Proceeds will benefit our local radio station KSCW (103.1). You do not have to get a holeinone to be a winner as there will be prizes daily.

 

  1. The Tin Cup Golf Tournament fundraiser for the Softball Club will be held this Sunday. Two shotgun starts will be at 8 a.m. at Deer Valley and Trail Ridge Golf Courses.

 

  1. S. Kids will be hosting an event on Sunday afternoon at Pebblebrook and Stardust Golf Courses. We a looking for 60 – 80 kids who will play either 9+ or 18 holes

 

Environmental Services:

  1. Tree replacement has been scheduled at Pebblebrook and Stardust this week. Next week two other courses will be scheduled.

 

  1. Golf Maintenance employees will be working on Library landscaping; we’ve installed new rock and decomposed granite. New plants will be added next.

 

  1. Environmental Services Manager Todd Patty attended a meeting at ADWR (Arizona Department of Water Resources) last week. We provided our water usage reports and everything checked out and went well.

 

  1. Winter flower removal has started at ARC, Beardsley and Beardsley/El Mirage signs. We will need to replace the soil in these planters.

 

Human Resources:

  1. HR Manager, Denise Babirak, attended a seminar last week on “Pay Discrepancies” and will attend a seminar this week on “Investigations in the Workplace”.

 

  1. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrested the person responsible for the theft and property damage at Pebblebrook and Stardust Golf Courses. Unfortunately, today we learned that the perpetrator made bail and is back out and about in SCW.

Mon, Mar 12 & 26                     JAM SESSION,  1-3 pm, Kuentz Courtyard. Join us on from 1 to 3 p.m. for two hours of entertainment in the Kuentz Courtyard.                                                          March 14, to take a trip down memory lane “With A Little Help from My Friends.” This local three-piece group will perform a long list of your favorite Beatles songs from “Meet the Beatles” all the way through “Abbey Road.” Experience the beautiful harmonies created by talented musicians, Tim Polizzi, Ellie Chaffee and Linda Marman as you enjoy a night with the Beatles under the stars. On Wednesday.

 

                                                          March 28, get ready for the toe-tapping genres of classic rock, blues and jazz with Bleu Passion. This five-piece band will perform an array of upbeat classics that will be sure to have you dancing in the isles.

 

Thu Mar 14                                    TOP HAT SERIESThe Scott Record Show, 3 pm and 7 pm, Palm Ridge Recreation Center.  Scott Record a comedian and impressionist, is one of the most requested headliners on the world’s most elite cruises.  Scott has toured with mega stars including Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Perry Commo, and more.  Scott has performed on all the major TV shows and his voiceover work can be heard worldwide.  Tickets can be purchased at our website www.suncitywest.com or at our Box Office located at the RH Johnson Rec Center, Mon-Fri 8 am – 3pm.  Tickets are $25.

Sat Mar 17                                      ARTS & CRAFTS FAIR, RH Johnson Complex, 8 am – 2 pm, Thousands of one-of-a-kind treasures for sale.  Food and Entertainment on the Great Lawn: 10 -11 John Hodgsen (Irish Music), 11-12 noon Bill Ciccone (keyboarder), 12-1 pm Fort Vines and Slim Nelson (variety).   Concessions:  Memos-Breakfast Burritos & Pulled Pork & hot Dogs: Kettle Corn; Sugar Plum Fro-yo; Donuts and Coffee in the morning at various locations.

Mar 28 & 29                                   CHARTERED CLUBS OFFICERS MEETING, 6 pm Wed, or 8 am Thursday, RH Johnson Social Hall.  It is mandatory that all clubs be represented by at least one officer. Sat Mar 31                                      EASTER EGG HUNT rolls into Beardsley Park! The Easter Bunny will be busy hiding eggs. Tickets for the Eggstravaganza Easter Egg Hunt are free to residents and their invited guests. For tickets, (which are required), residents must show rec cards at the R.H. Johnson Box Office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets are available through March 28. The hunt starts at 9 a.m., with children grouped by age Gates will open at 8:30 a.m. After the children have finished collecting their eggs the Easter Bunny will arrive for pictures at 9:30 a.m. Parents must have their own camera. Bounce houses, face painting, crafts, and much more will be available. We will sell donuts, coffee, and drinks. Children must be registered for the Easter egg hunt. Children must be at least 1 (walking) but no older than 10.
