Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – March 06, 2017

Projects:

1. Running Construction has installed the chain link fencing on the new Pickle Ball Courts. Court coatings are scheduled to be applied this morning followed by the light fixtures.  We are waiting for the schedule for asphalt patching around the perimeter of the courts.

2. ForeSite Construction is scheduled to pour the concrete slab in the pool lobby area Tuesday morning. Pre-treatment for termites will be applied today.

3. Running Construction has completed 98% of the work at the Mediation Garden at Beardsley. Once the temporary signs have been installed, Running Construction will install the sign lighting.  We are awaiting the Rotary Club’s input on the progress of the signage.

4. Precise signs have poured the footings for the two remaining signs for the Village Store entry and the Sports Pavilion south entry. The forms for the sign base will be set today.

Sports Pavilion:

5. We continue to be busy at the Sports Pavilion. Our Sunday Special brought in $602 in revenue and Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $344.

6. We recorded our twentieth 300 game bowled at Johnson Lanes – Congratulations go out to Gary Studard!

Recreation:

7. Tickets are on sale for the Westernaires and Rhythm Tappers events. Tickets for the Westernnaires Show can be purchased for April 6 (2 p.m.), April 7 and 8 (7 p.m.) and April 9 (2 p.m.).  Tickets for the Rhythm Tappers Show can be purchased for Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22 (7 p.m. and Sunday, April 23 (2 p.m.).

8. Our next Jam Session is scheduled for Monday, March 13 from 1 – 3 pm in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join us for two hours of entertainment.

9. Join us for our next So You Think You Have Talent in the Kuentz Courtyard on Tuesday, Mar. 14 at 11:00 am.  Entertainment is provided by singer Gale Leach.

10. Join us for Happy Hour on Wed., Mar. 8 from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Kuentz Courtyard. This event is free and for residents of SCW and their invited guests.  Bring your own beverage and snacks.  Ice and coffee are provided.  Entertainment is provided by Mary Jo Johnson from 6 – 7 p.m. and John Peters from 7 – 8 p.m.

11. Tickets for the Rene Foss Cruise Ship event on Friday, March 3 are sold out.

12. Tickets for our March 9 Cruise Ship Series Event, Motown Magic are sold out for the 3 p.m. and 7 pm show.

13. Happy Camp is scheduled to take place the last three weeks of March beginning March 13. Be sure to sign your visiting youngsters up at the Box Office for Happy Camp Events.  For more details call 623-544-6093.

14. Due to upcoming Spring Break, we are doubling the monitors at our pools during kids swim hours in an effort to maintain a good atmosphere for all.

15. “Spring Fest” tickets for April 10, 11 and 12 are sold out. 2,400 tickets were sold for each show.

16. Saturday, March 11 is our “Motors and Meals” event in the R. H. Johnson parking lot from 1 to 6 p.m. The Automotive Restoration Club (ARC) will be setting up some of their classic cars, eight food trailers and a beer garden.  This is an effort to raise money and promote awareness for Northwest Valley Connect.  If this event is successful we will consider expanding it for next year.

17. Our next guided walking trail tour is at the Praying Mantis Trail, Saturday, March 11, 9:00 a.m. at Beardsley.

Library:

18. 41 Members of the Mac-Cro-Knit Club participated in a “Knit-In at the Library on March 2. They demonstrated the making of their charity projects and accepted donations of yarn and needles.

19. Our next Chat with Local Authors in on Tuesday, March 7 between 10 a.m. and noon at the Library. SCW resident and author, Jay Horne, will be on hand to sign his books “Theater” and “The Love of My Life”.

General Services:

20. Regarding voting in the upcoming election for Governing Board Candidates, look for details on how to vote (online, early and in person) in the March issue of the Rec. Center News. Unique emails need to be on file by March 8  for residents to be able to vote online in the upcoming election for Governing Board Directors.

21. Master Link has installed a “key swipe” lock system on the IT Bldg. and RHJ Admin. Building doors. IT will be issuing cards for accessing the new system and will have the company out here to educate personnel as to how the system operates.

22. We have put together a draft survey for the Community Relations Committee to consider. The Committee will be reviewing the questions and determine the logistics of how they would like to conduct the survey.

23. New computers have been installed in the Data Resource Center at the Library that are faster and more efficient than the old ones.

24. We will be checking into the possibility of streaming Governing Board Meetings live. Several items need to be taken into consideration should the Governing Board decide they would like this to happen.

Environmental Services:

25. Environmental Services employees are getting caught up with work out on the golf courses after the conclusion of the LPGA event this past weekend.

26. Landscape Maintenance has completed planting trees and bushes for the Meditation Garden and put rock down last week.

27. The Manager of Environmental Services has a meeting with ADWR tomorrow morning on water usage which will be held off site.

Golf Operations:

28. The LPGA Legends event was held this past weekend. Julie Inkster won this year.  Players and spectators had many compliments for the condition of the course.

29. Revenue for March is down $30,000 over prior year for the same time period.

30. Hole in One International is sponsoring an event from Mar. 13 to Mar. 18 at Echo Mesa Golf Course. For $5.00 participants get 7 golf balls and a chance at winning a half million dollars for getting a hole-in-one.  Proceeds from this event go to the Sun City West Foundation.

31. Saturday is the Disabled American Veteran Event at Pebblebrook Golf Course. 100 participants are signed up for this event.

Facility Maintenance:

32. We will be pressure washing the front entrance of the R. H. Johnson Library today prior to painting. We are currently painting the south side of the Library and the west side is halfway completed.

33. The Library Clock Tower project has been completed. We are working on setting the volume for the chimes and the music.

Financial Services:

34. The first draft of the FY 17/18 Budget has been completed and will be presented at the Budget and Finance Committee on Tuesday, Mar. 7.

Management:

35. We are in the process of auditing chartered Clubs financials. 30 of 100 have been completed.

Every Tue at Kuentz                       SO YOU THINK YOU HAVE TALENT! 11 am at Kuentz Courtyard.  Join us for our sixth season highlighting many new acts and all of your old favorites! Join us in the Kuentz Courtyard starting at 11 a.m. Tuesdays for an hour of fun.  Our lineup for January is:

                                                                 March 21 – With a Little Help from my Friends (Beatles Tribute). This is a 90-minute show.

                                                                 March 28 – Singer Marilyn McClenahan with Divas and Demons (new)

Mon  Mar 13 & 27                            JAM SESSION,  1-3 pm, Kuentz Courtyard. Join  us on from 1 to 3 p.m. for two hours of entertainment in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join in or just sit back and relax and enjoy the music. This starts our third season. If you play a string instrument or other similar instruments join in on the fun. We supply sound and chairs for the musicians. This is open to SCW residents and guests. For questions or information, contact Dori Miller at 623- 544-6193.

Wed Mar 15                                      SURPRISE POPS CONCERT,  5 pm, Beardsley Park.  It’s Free, Bring your own Chair!  Hamburgers, hot dogs and brats will be available at the concession stands.  Today the band has grown to about 100 members and plays free concerts to thousands of West Valley audiences every season. The band still keeps the tradition of not charging for a concert. However, they do ask the audience to bring a nonperishable food donation to the concert for the food bank.

Fri Mar 17                                         DUNLAP AND PENNINGTON , 7 pm Palm Ridge Recreation Center.  This event is SOLD OUT!

Sat Mar 18                                        ARTS & CRAFTS FAIR 8 am – 2 pm. RH Johnson Complex. Thousands of one-of-a-kind treasures.  Stop and shop!  See all the beautiful art created by our fellow residents.

Wed Mar 23                                      WEST VALLEY WINDS, 5 pm, Beardsley Park, Its free, bring your own chair!.  Concessions will be on hand, including hamburgers, hot dogs and brats.  West Valley Wind Ensemble began more than 30 years ago when a group of musicians led by Walter Moeck, got together to read and play music in Sun City West. In 2014, the group moved its rehearsals to Sun City at the Valley View Food Bank. The Food Bank’s sponsorship enabled the band to become an Arizona incorporated nonprofit organization. The band continues to have a strong relationship and commitment to Valley View Food Bank. The West Valley Wind Ensemble gives concerts in the West Valley area, seeking donations of funds to cover costs of the band’s operation and non-perishable food items for the Food Bank.

Fri Mar 31                                          March Dance – RHYTHM EDITION, 7pm, Palm Ridge.  This event is SOLD OUT!

Saturdays                                           URBAN TRAIL ESCORTED HIKES,   9 am.  Join us on an escorted hike on one of our designated Urban Trails.  The Urban Trail Guide is online at www.suncitywest.com or pick up a brochure at any Rec Center.  Committee members who created the guides are excited to formally unveil the routes as they invite community members to walk with them beginning in January. All walks will begin 9 a.m. Saturday mornings, starting at the recreation center from which the routes originate. Members wishing to join the walking tours should meet up with the day’s guide near the fitness center of the designated rec center. There are expected to be two guides per walk, and the Rec Centers will provide bottled water to get started. The schedule of walks is as follows:
