R.H. Johnson Library

The R.H. Johnson Library is a 14,000 square-foot private library established in 1979. With its clocktower and chimes, it is the most recognized building in Sun City West. The library houses more than 49,000 items including regular and large print books, books on CD, jigsaw puzzles, board games, periodicals, investment resources, Blu-Rays and DVDs, and a digital collection through Overdrive/Libby. The library has a Data Resource Center with computers that are free for members to use. You must have an RCSCW Recreation Card to enter and check out materials; your Rec Card is your Library Card. The library is run by 17 staff members and more than 150 volunteers; with materials support from the Friends of the R.H. Johnson Library.

Mission of the R.H. Johnson Library

The Mission of the R. H. Johnson Library is to provide recreational reading, listening, and viewing plus accurate, current information and developing and presenting programs that provide additional opportunities for information, learning, and entertainment for the residents of Sun City West. 

Loan Periods

  • Older books, puzzles and games – three weeks
  • New books – two weeks
  • Older books on CD – four weeks
  • New books on CD – two weeks
  • DVDs and Blu-Rays – one week

Overdue fines

  • Books and other materials – 10 cents per day
  • DVDs – $1 per day

Book/Movie drop off

Drop boxes are located adjacent to the library by the clock tower.

Library resources and services

Earl E. Mackert Data Resource Center

Located in the Library, the Data Resource Center has 12 computers with internet access, equipment to print, scan and copy documents (Email print jobs to: print@suncitywest.com) for Rec Card Holders and their guests. The DRC offers 1-on-1 tech instruction and 4 study rooms that can be reserved.

Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality is technology that allows you to enter and interact in a 3D computer-generated world. There are several scenarios with differing degrees of interaction from roller coasters, tours through cities, racing, and more. Virtual reality is offered to participants 10 years or older at the library several times a month, register in the Data Resource Center.

Media Department

The Media department has over 14,000 Blu-Rays and DVDs. The collection includes the latest releases, TV series, documentaries, performances, and many other topics.

Information Center

The Information Center houses our 120 magazine subscriptions, non-fiction collection, and three computers that have Value Line, IQ Trends, Consumer Reports and Ancestry. The Information Center has a black/white copier and the Community Information Center.

Homebound Program

The Homebound Program is a free library items by mail service that the library provides for Sun City West Recreation Members who are restricted to their homes by medical conditions, physical disabilities, extended illnesses, or excessive transportation problems.

Quiet Room

The Quiet Room houses our biography collection, oversized books, periodicals, stock information, and sight impaired aids (magnifiers, Patriot Voice Document Scan and Read Machine).

Large Print Room

The Large Print Room houses our extensive collection of large print fiction books.

Children's Department

The Children’s Department offers puzzles, books, and books on CD for preschool through sixth grade. Special Story Times are held throughout the year for our little ones visiting Sun City West.
