Sun City West members who are caring for a loved one with middle-stage dementia are invited to participate in a special event Dec. 13 at the R.H. Johnson Library.
The Library is seeking participants to evaluate the new Memory Kits being created for the Library’s Memory Care Resources. Registration is required as space is very limited. The event will serve as a fun hands-on activity for each member and their caregiver, and will allow their caregivers to provide feedback to the Library about the kits’ effectiveness.
Each caregiver will help their loved one create a take-home gift. These will be similar to the seek-and-find tubes included in the memory kits. These clear tubes are filled with themed materials to elicit memories and inspiration for those suffering from the middle stages to the beginnings of late-stage dementia. This event is not appropriate for those who were just recently diagnosed, or those in the later stages of the disease. Each member must be accompanied by their caregiver.
In creating their Christmas-themed take-home gifts, the caregivers and their loved ones can talk about Christmas memories – including the sights, sounds and smells that make the holidays memorable. Caregivers will be asked to fill out a quick questionnaire about how they like the kits, and how they helped them connect with their loved ones. Ideas for additional kit items will be welcomed.
Two sessions will be offered – from 1 to 1:45 and from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. Dec. 13. To reserve a spot for you and your loved one, call 623-544-6644.
