 Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – June 19, 2017

 

Projects:

  1. R. H. Johnson Facility Enhancement Signage has been awarded to Bootz & Duke signs. Electrical work for the signage is out for bid.  We are waiting for Bootz & Duke to provide us with an installation schedule.  “Swim & Fitness” is the signage we need first.

 

  1. The R. H. Johnson Phase 4 Enhancement Pre-Bid.meetings are complete and we are expecting the bids between tomorrow afternoon and Wednesday afternoon.

 

  1. The R. H. Johnson Rip n’Sew replacement countertops project was completed on 6-13-17 by Running Construction.

 

  1. The R. H. Johnson Acoustical Ceiling project is out for bid.

 

  1. Electrical plans are being drawn for the GV Pro Shop outside lighting project.

 

Facility Maintenance:

  1. Foresite Construction has completed the interior tile repair going across the walkway from the massage room. Interior walls have been textured and partially painted and ceiling grid installed.  This week vendors will be installing video surveillance and sound systems.

 

  1. We’ve replaced all cast venting pipes in the Grandview Pro Shop restroom. The sinks, counter tops, urinals, toilets and partitions were removed.  The wall was opened up and all cast vent pipes were replaced with ABS pipe.  We had a second smoke test performed with no leaks so we went ahead and closed up and repaired the wall.  We also removed one urinal and re-plumbed the wall so the remaining two urinals are centered on the wall.  The tile will be reinstalled followed by the fixtures and partitions.

 

  1. The R. H. Johnson Tennis Court painting is almost completed.

 

Sports Pavilion:

  1. Our Sunday Special brought in $503 in revenue and Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $317 and our VIP Bowling Program $139.

 

Recreation:

  1. Tickets are sold out for our Fourth of July Event being held on July 4th at 1:00 p.m. at Palm Ridge.

 

  1. The first of our Summer Series was sold out. Our next show is at the Stardust Theater on July 10 and 11 featuring Mary Jo Johnson.  Tickets are still available at $10 per person at the SCW Box Office or on line.

 

  1. We will be installing new LED stage lighting at Palm Ridge. We will also be installing some new LED lighting at the Stardust Theater.

 

  1. We will be meeting with management of the new R. H. Johnson Pool Snack Bar this week. They will be surveying potential patrons of the “Buzz” snack bar to determine what people are looking for on the menu.

 

  1. We are currently deep cleaning all four recreation facilities.

 

Library:

  1. Just a reminder that the Library will be closed beginning Saturday July 22 for maintenance.

 

  1. All visiting young children and their families are invited to join us for Summer Story Time in the Library at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, June 7 through July 12.

 

  1. This year’s Summer Community Puzzle, Educa’s 18,000-piece Sistine Chapel, is a real challenge and all are invited to help. People may work at it for as much or as little time as they wish.  Work on this year’s puzzle continues.  Puzzlers are confident they will finish before the library closes for maintenance at the end of July.

 

  1. The SCW IT Department and the R. H. Johnson Library will offer three Virtual Reality sessions on Friday, June 23. Each session will accommodate 10 people.  Residents may sign up by calling 623-544-6130.  Although all are welcome to register, people who are no longer as physically active as they once were are sure to find Virtual Reality to be a new activity they can enjoy.

 

  1. We have had an excellent response to this year’s Summer Reading Club even though the building will be closed during a good part of it. Many participants are checking out eBooks and submitting their weekly logs via email.

 

  1. The Friends of the Library asks everyone to be sure to donate all books, DVDs, audiobooks and puzzles for their August 5 book sale prior to July 20. No one will be at the Library to accept donations after that date.

 

Financial Services:

  1. May Financials were sent out last week. We were 3% over on revenue and put $300,000 of investment in the bank.  Expenses were $100,000 over compared to the same 11-month time period last year.

 

Environmental Services:

  1. Pebblebrook reopens tomorrow, June 20. Echo Mesa closed on Thursday, June 22 for summer maintenance and reopens on Tuesday, June 27.

 

  1. Reminder: Grandview Golf Course closed down for summer maintenance on Monday, May 29 will reopen after fall overseeding on October 17.

 

  1. Hours for Golf Maintenance workers have been temporarily changed this week due to the excessive heat. Hours for this week are 4:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  We will see how this works out and may continue this for the summer.

 

  1. Landscape Maintenance will be starting tree removal and red rock removal at the R. H. Johnson Library this week.

 

  1. Landscape Maintenance finished up trimming palm trees at Pebblebrook Golf Course today.

 

  1. H. Johnson Phase IV includes the planting of 28 trees (23 Palo Verdes and 5 Chinese Pistachio) as well as the installation of 61 landscape lights.

 

  1. Installation of pavers at the Softball Field will be finished up this week.

 

  1. We are still waiting on the cap for the planter in the R. H. Johnson Courtyard. We plan to delay installing the plants until the excessive heat subsides so they are able to transition.

 

  1. We are leveling Lawn Bowls Courts 1 & 2 this week. The club was happy with the leveling we did for them on 2 courts last year.

 

Golf Operations:

  1. For the first 18 days of June golf greens fees/cart fees are up over prior year by $10,000 and up 600 rounds.

 

Human Resources:

  1. We are in the process of re-writing the Employee Handbook due to new labor law requirements.

Tue Jul 4                                                        FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION featuring FOREVER YOUNG CONCERT 1 pm Palm Ridge,  SOLD OUT!

                                                                        Forever Young Orchestra will play a medley of patriotic music for the 4th of July show. The Forever Young Orchestra is comprised of 19 accomplished and college-degreed musicians who have all studied and performed music their entire adult lives, most starting in their childhoods. The instruments in the orchestra include two alto saxophones, two tenor saxophones, one baritone saxophone, one flute, one clarinet, three trumpets, four trombones, one keyboard, one drummer, one bass guitar, one rhythm guitar and one vocalist. The experience of the musicians range from playing in high school, college and Armed Forces bands, playing in various bands and symphonies, teaching music at high schools and now combining all their talents in The Forever Young Orchestra, exuding the big band sound.  The event is free for Sun City West Residents, but you need a ticket.

 

 

Mon & Tue Jul 10 & 11                               MARY JO JOHNSON, 7 pm, Stardust Theater, Mary Jo has entertained audiences at an early age of 8, starting out playing the piano. As she grew and matured, she discovered her true gift, singing and performing. Her style, range and selection of music has made her a popular individual all around the valley. Her selection of music includes such artists as: Patsy Cline, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Connie Frances, Tina Turner and many more. Get ready to sit back, relax and enjoy a show that will make you feel like she’s singing right to you.  Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased online at suncitywest.com or at the RH Johnson Box Office 8 am – 3pm.

 

 

Mon & Tue Aug 14 & 15                              THE DRY HEAT BAND, 7 pm at the Stardust Theater, The Dry Heat Band is from the Northwest Valley area of Phoenix and performs a variety of music from western, country, folk, bluegrass, old standards and gospel. They style their performances to the entertainment needs of the audience, using a bit of humor, some interaction and audience participation.  Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased online at suncitywest.com or at the RH Johnson Box Office 8 am – 3pm.

 

Wed Aug 23                                                   SIZZLING SINATRA SUMMER SPECIAL, 5 pm, Palm Ridge Recreation Center, Tickets for the cabaret-style show are just $5 per person and go on sale July 18 at the R.H. Johnson Box Office or online at suncitywest.com. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and the event is open to the public. Beverages will be available or BYOB and bring your own snacks. The melodies. The music. The romance. Mr. Cimorelli will take you back to a time when nightclubs sizzled with hot rhythms and cool lyrics. And one man reigned above it all – Frank Sinatra. Through the musical styling of noted vocalist Frank Cimorelli, that classic sound fills the air once again. You can experience these unforgettable songs sung by an unforgettable voice. Sip martinis while being serenaded with the best loved classics. Frank Cimorelli is an accomplished actor and singer. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has several film and television credits. Look for the soft opening of the RH Johnson Swim and Fitness Complex sometime in August.

The GRAND OPENING is scheduled for the weekend of Sept 16th.
