Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – June 26, 2017

Projects:

1. We held a Pre-Construction Meeting on the Desert Trails Pro Shop Remodel project to go over the scope of work.

2. The R. H. Johnson Phase 4 Enhancement Project has been awarded to K. L. McIntyre.

3. A pre-construction meeting was held on the R. H. Johnson Library Carpet and Paint Project with staff and the vendor.

Facility Maintenance:

4. Grandview Pro Shop restroom repairs have been complete. A second smoke test of the vent piping was conducted which we passed before sealing the wall back up.  This should take care of the phantom unpleasant odors at the Pro Shop.  All temporary portable toilets have been removed.

5. It looks like the Library Tower Bees are back but this time the honey is dripping onto the outside of the tower. We have noticed some deterioration of the roof of the tower and plan to have a roofer come out to inspect it.  We would like to remove the tile and the plywood from the tower to give us accessibility to the internal tower so we can take care of the bee problem while making repairs to the roof.

6. Facility Maintenance crews are working to keep all air conditioning units up and running

7. When temperatures go up over 110 degrees outdoors it is difficult to keep the temperature in the indoor pool area at Palm Ridge cool. If the temperature gets up too high we are required to close the pool for safety reasons.  We are trying different ways to use the ventilation system at night to determine if it helps temperatures stay cooler during the day.  We will be addressing the problem and looking for a more permanent fix for this during the next FY18-19 budget process.

Sports Pavilion:

8. Our Sunday Special brought in $500 in revenue and Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $306.

Recreation:

9. Tickets are sold out for our Fourth of July Event being held on July 4^th at 1:00 p.m. at Palm Ridge.

10. Our next Summer Series event is at the Stardust Theater on July 10 and 11 featuring Mary Jo Johnson. Tickets are still available at $10 per person at the SCW Box Office or on line.

11. We have had over 605 responses to our survey regarding what our members would like to see offered by the new snack bar at the R. H. Johnson Pool. The response has been great as we’ve done no real advertising for this survey.  We appreciate all the ideas!

12. We continue to deep clean all four recreation facilities.

Library:

13. Just a reminder that the Library will be closed beginning Saturday July 22 for maintenance.

14. All visiting young children and their families are invited to join us for Summer Story Time in the Library at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays through July 12.

15. This year’s Summer Community Puzzle, Educa’s 18,000-piece Sistine Chapel, is now one-third complete! The Puzzlers opened the last bag of pieces this past Saturday and they are confident they will finish before the library closes for maintenance at the end of July.

16. The SCW IT Department and the R. H. Johnson Library presented three Virtual Reality sessions on Friday, June 23 at the library. All participants gave very positive feedback so three more sessions will be offered this Friday, June 30.  Interested residents may sign up in person or by calling the library at 623-544-6130.

17. The Library will present J. C. Eaton, the Sun City West wife and husband writing team of Ann I. Goldfarb and James E. Clapp at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11 in the Acacia Room of the Palm Ridge Recreation Center. Ann and James will entertain you with tales of their new book, “Booked 4 Murder,” the first in their new cozy Sophie Kimball Mysteries Series set right here in Sun City West.  Although this is James’ first novel, Ann has already published nine travel-time mysteries.

18. The Friends of the Library asks everyone to be sure to donate all books, DVDs, audiobooks and puzzles for their August 5 book sale prior to July 20. No one will be at the Library to accept donations after that date.

Financial Services:

19. This is the last week of the fiscal year. All expenses for FY16-17 are to be turned in to Accounting as soon as possible.

20. The Auditor will be here July 24 through August 11 to perform the Association Annual Audit.

General Services:

21. Jason will have all new fees & other charges updated in the system July 1, 2017.

22. Several of the lap tops that came in for the Board had issues with the keyboards. We sent the whole order back and ordered new ones.

Environmental Services:

23.  Echo Mesa Golf Course reopen tomorrow, June 27.  Deer Valley closes on Thursday, June 22 for summer maintenance and reopens on Tuesday, July 11.

24.  Reminder: Grandview Golf Course closed down for summer maintenance on Monday, May 29 will reopen after fall overseeding on October 17.

25.  Summer hours for Golf Maintenance is currently 4:30 a.m. to Noon. This change has been beneficial for golf course maintenance workers during the excessive heat we’ve been experiencing.

26.  Landscape Maintenance continues trimming palm trees but the work has been slower than we’d like due to the heat.

Golf Operations:

27.  For the first 25 days of June golf greens fees/cart fees are down over prior year by $3,900 and down 420 rounds. The extreme heat has finally caught up with us.

Human Resources:

28.  We are in the process of re-writing the Employee Handbook due to new labor law requirements.

Tue Jul 4                                                        FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION featuring FOREVER YOUNG CONCERT 1 pm Palm Ridge,  SOLD OUT!

                                                                        Forever Young Orchestra will play a medley of patriotic music for the 4th of July show. The Forever Young Orchestra is comprised of 19 accomplished and college-degreed musicians who have all studied and performed music their entire adult lives, most starting in their childhoods. The instruments in the orchestra include two alto saxophones, two tenor saxophones, one baritone saxophone, one flute, one clarinet, three trumpets, four trombones, one keyboard, one drummer, one bass guitar, one rhythm guitar and one vocalist. The experience of the musicians range from playing in high school, college and Armed Forces bands, playing in various bands and symphonies, teaching music at high schools and now combining all their talents in The Forever Young Orchestra, exuding the big band sound.  The event is free for Sun City West Residents, but you need a ticket.

Mon & Tue Jul 10 & 11                               MARY JO JOHNSON, 7 pm, Stardust Theater, Mary Jo has entertained audiences at an early age of 8, starting out playing the piano. As she grew and matured, she discovered her true gift, singing and performing. Her style, range and selection of music has made her a popular individual all around the valley. Her selection of music includes such artists as: Patsy Cline, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Connie Frances, Tina Turner and many more. Get ready to sit back, relax and enjoy a show that will make you feel like she’s singing right to you.  Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased online at suncitywest.com or at the RH Johnson Box Office 8 am – 3pm.

Mon & Tue Aug 14 & 15                              THE DRY HEAT BAND, 7 pm at the Stardust Theater, The Dry Heat Band is from the Northwest Valley area of Phoenix and performs a variety of music from western, country, folk, bluegrass, old standards and gospel. They style their performances to the entertainment needs of the audience, using a bit of humor, some interaction and audience participation.  Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased online at suncitywest.com or at the RH Johnson Box Office 8 am – 3pm.

Wed Aug 23                                                   SIZZLING SINATRA SUMMER SPECIAL, 5 pm, Palm Ridge Recreation Center, Tickets for the cabaret-style show are just $5 per person and go on sale July 18 at the R.H. Johnson Box Office or online at suncitywest.com. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and the event is open to the public. Beverages will be available or BYOB and bring your own snacks. The melodies. The music. The romance. Mr. Cimorelli will take you back to a time when nightclubs sizzled with hot rhythms and cool lyrics. And one man reigned above it all – Frank Sinatra. Through the musical styling of noted vocalist Frank Cimorelli, that classic sound fills the air once again. You can experience these unforgettable songs sung by an unforgettable voice. Sip martinis while being serenaded with the best loved classics. Frank Cimorelli is an accomplished actor and singer. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has several film and television credits. He has starred in many musical stage productions including “Guys and Dolls,” “Singing in the Rain,” and “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” Cimorelli’s tribute brings Sinatra back to life in what is being called a “must see” show.

Look for the soft opening of the RH Johnson Swim and Fitness Complex sometime in August.

The GRAND OPENING is scheduled for the weekend of Sept 16^th.
