Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – July 17, 2017

Projects:

1. Desert Trails Pro Shop Scope of Work is completed. Invitations for Bid were sent out to vendors on 7/14/17.

2. The R. H. Johnson Phase 4 Enhancement Project began on 6-29-17. Partial concrete pour at the Sports Pavilion walkway entrance and Memo’s Restaurant driveway curbs took place on July 13 and 14.  The rain will slow this project down until later this week when the forecast calls for dryer weather.

3. H. Johnson Library Carpet and Paint Project start date is set for 7-24-17. Carpet arrival date is 7/21/17.

4. The ceiling tile in the Shuffleboard Room was tested for asbestos. The results of the test are expected tomorrow, July 18.

5. H. Johnson Parking Lot Lighting, Section II work Scope is completed. Invitation to Bid sent out to vendors on 7/12/17.

6. The R. H. Johnson Parking Lot Island Barriers, Section II; this project has been started with Archi-CAD creating a site plan.

7. ARC approved the final revision of the R. H. Johnson ARC Paint Booth. Archi-CAD is revising the final plan which should be back to us in about two weeks.

Facility Maintenance:

8. Facility Maintenance is in the process of changing out the electrical connections on golf course drinking fountains.

9. The Agriculture Club called to report storm damage. The back gate to the Agriculture Club near Grand Avenue and the railroad tracks blew down which has since been repaired and they lost some shingles on the roof which we have scheduled for repair.

Sports Pavilion:

10. Sunday’s Special brought in $427 in revenue and Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $348.

Recreation:

11. Our Summer Series event on July 10 and 11 featuring Mary Jo Johnson went well. See the attached Upcoming Events List for August entertainment scheduled.

Library:

12. The puzzlers have until this Thursday to complete this year’s community puzzle. The folding tables will go back to the Social Hall on Friday.

13. Saturday, July 22 is the last day the R. H. Johnson library will be open to patrons. In addition to their regular duties, staff members have been busy packing files and labeling equipment in preparation for the fresh paint and new carpeting.  All books and other items must be returned by Thursday, July 20.  The reopening of the library will be announced in the Sun City West eNews and on the Facebook page.

14. Last Tuesday we had a large crowd show up for the Booked 4 Murder book talk by author J. C. Eaton, the Sun City West wife and husband writing team of Ann I. Goldfarb and James E. It was a great turnout and we had to turn some people away.

15. The Friends of the Library asks everyone to be sure to donate all books, DVDs, audiobooks and puzzles for their August 5 book sale prior to July 20. No one will be at the Library to accept donations after that date until the library reopens.

16. H. Johnson Library Director, Jane Kauzlaric will be attending the SCW Kiwanis meeting tomorrow to speak about the library.

17. Library staff receives compliments every day on the new library landscaping. Great job by the Landscape Maintenance crew!

Financial Services:

18. We continue to prepare for the annual Audit scheduled to take place July 24 through August 11.

General Services:

19. We are working on updating and making changes to our Member Packet. We are working with Member Services to adopt a new magazine format to save time and money by removing information that frequently changes so information in the magazine stays accurate and will need be reprinted less.  Frequently changing information (GB Listing, Fee Schedules, etc.) will be available on line or as handouts for new members to use for informational purposes.

20. On July 1 we started working on a new program to give our members the ability to make On-Line Payments. There was a slight delay in the process and we look forward to it starting next week.

21. Center News Asst. Michael will be moving to the IT Server Room temporarily while the library is being painted and carpeted.

22. Virtual Reality will be moved to Palm Ridge August 4, 11 and 18.

23. The deadline for the September Rec. Center News is August 1.

Environmental Services:

24. Trail Ridge Golf Course reopens on Tuesday, July 18 after summer aerification.

25. Stardust Golf Course closes Thursday, July 20 and reopens on Tuesday, July 25.

26. Reminder: Grandview Golf Course closed down for summer maintenance on Monday, May 29 will reopen after fall overseeding on October 17.

27. Landscape Maintenance at the Library is almost complete but will be put on hold due to debris cleanup from the recent storms. We estimate that there must be at least a ton of tree and landscaping debris on our golf courses.  We lost 18 trees on our courses and 6 at other facilities and received only ¼” of rain on average.  We could have lost more trees had it not been for the tree trimming and thinning program that was started several years ago.  There was a time in the past that we lost between 60 and 70 trees due to storms in one season.  This trimming program seems to have alleviated some of that.

28. We are down 14 employees in the Golf Maintenance Division. Hiring qualified employees is difficult enough especially when a local fast food place is offering $13 per hour.  We are placing ads in the local papers, on internet sites and with the Dept. of Economic Security as well as with other venues. We are beginning to feel the effects of vacant positions on each course as it results in the inability to pay attention to the smaller details to the extent we would like and storm damage only adds to these concerns.

29. Pumps went down at both Deer Valley and Trail Ridge on Friday night. We are not sure if the storm (lightning) had anything to do with them going down but we got them up and running over the weekend.

30. The lake aerification pump at Echo Mesa #15 went out over the weekend and we are working to get it back up and running.

Golf Operations:

31. Rounds for the month of July so far are down about 400 for the same time period last year and about $6,000 in revenue over prior year. We attribute most of this to the prolonged, excessive heat and the monsoon weather we’ve been experiencing.

32. About 302 golfers participated in our June and July Special Events.

Human Resources:

33. HR will be assisting the auditors with information for the upcoming annual audit.

34. We are working to ensure that all new labor and employment laws are included in our procedures and properly followed.

Upcoming Events:  July – Aug 2017

Mon & Tue Aug 14 & 15                              THE DRY HEAT BAND, 7 pm at the Stardust Theater, The Dry Heat Band is from the Northwest Valley area of Phoenix and performs a variety of music from western, country, folk, bluegrass, old standards and gospel. They style their performances to the entertainment needs of the audience, using a bit of humor, some interaction and audience participation.  Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased online at suncitywest.com or at the RH Johnson Box Office 8 am – 3pm.

Wed Aug 23                                                   SIZZLING SINATRA SUMMER SPECIAL, 5 pm, Palm Ridge Recreation Center, Tickets for the cabaret-style show are just $5 per person and go on sale July 18 at the R.H. Johnson Box Office or online at suncitywest.com. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and the event is open to the public. Beverages will be available or BYOB and bring your own snacks. The melodies. The music. The romance. Mr. Cimorelli will take you back to a time when nightclubs sizzled with hot rhythms and cool lyrics. And one man reigned above it all – Frank Sinatra. Through the musical styling of noted vocalist Frank Cimorelli, that classic sound fills the air once again. You can experience these unforgettable songs sung by an unforgettable voice. Sip martinis while being serenaded with the best loved classics. Frank Cimorelli is an accomplished actor and singer. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has several film and television credits. He has starred in many musical stage productions including “Guys and Dolls,” “Singing in the Rain,” and “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” Cimorelli’s tribute brings Sinatra back to life in what is being called a “must see” show.

Look for the soft opening of the RH Johnson Swim and Fitness Complex on August 28th.

The GRAND OPENING is scheduled for the weekend of Sept 16^th.
