Subject: Weekly Activity Report – July 10, 2017
Projects:
- All Pre-Construction Meetings and Requests for Quotation have been completed with the invited RCSCW Preferred Roofing, Asphalt and Flooring vendors. This ensures that approximately 1/3 of FY17-18 budgeted projects are scheduled or ready for scheduling.
- The R. H. Johnson Phase 4 Enhancement Project began on 6-29-17. Site concrete and asphalt demolition of the Sports Pavilion Driveway and the north entrance including the sidewalks and asphalt up to the pool entry is complete. Layout for forming concrete walkways begins 7-10-17.
- R. H. Johnson Library Carpet and Paint Project start date is set for 7-24-17. Carpet arrival date is 7/21/17.
- Thinking Caps is overseeing Bootz and Duke Signs for the RHJ Signage Enhancement currently in progress to ensure consistency from design through installation.
- RHJ Spa Ceiling Replacement Project has been awarded to Running Construction. Due to the material timeline we expect this project to begin 8/7/17.
- The ceiling tile in the Shuffleboard Room will require asbestos testing of current tile prior to installing replacement tiles.
Facility Maintenance:
- To address the instances of speeding through the parking lot in front of the R. H Johnson Administrative Building we have added an additional stop sign to slow vehicles down. We are also checking into making the crosswalk into a long, elevated speed bump.
- We removed the old drain lines outside of Memo’s Restaurant and replaced them with new ones.
- APS shut the power down at Grandview Pro Shop early this morning to allow Wilson Electric to locate the source of some electrical problems at the facility. They determined it was a faulty switch which was replaced. Maricopa County came back out to green-tag the work and APS returned to switch the power back on. The shutdown lasted a little over 2 hours.
Sports Pavilion:
- Saturday’s Special brought in $200, Sunday Special $356 in revenue and Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $367.
Recreation:
- Our next Summer Series event is at the Stardust Theater tonight and tomorrow, July 10 and 11 featuring Mary Jo Johnson. Tickets are still available at $10 per person at the SCW Box Office or on line.
Library:
- Just a reminder that the Library will be closed beginning Saturday July 22 for maintenance.
- All visiting young children and their families are invited to join us for Summer Story Time in the Library at 10 a.m. We had record attendance for this event this year. Our last Story Time this summer is on Wednesday, July 12.
- Two sections of the puzzle were joined together on July 1st and real progress is being made on the last sections. The “puzzlers” are confident that, with help, they can complete this difficult project before the Library closes for redecoration.
- The SCW IT Department and the R. H. Johnson Library presented three more Virtual Reality sessions on Friday, June 30 at the library. Again, these sessions were enthusiastically received by participants.
- The Library will present J. C. Eaton, the Sun City West wife and husband writing team of Ann I. Goldfarb and James E. Clapp at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11 in the Acacia Room of the Palm Ridge Recreation Center. Ann and James will entertain you with tales of their new book, “Booked 4 Murder,” the first in their new cozy Sophie Kimball Mysteries Series set right here in Sun City West. Although this is James’ first novel, Ann has already published nine travel-time mysteries.
- The Friends of the Library asks everyone to be sure to donate all books, DVDs, audiobooks and puzzles for their August 5 book sale prior to July 20. No one will be at the Library to accept donations after that date.
Financial Services:
- The Auditor will be here July 24 through August 11 to perform the Association Annual Audit.
General Services:
- We are working on updating and making changes to our Member Packet. We will be adopting a new magazine format to save time and money by removing information that frequently changes so information in the magazine stays accurate and will need be reprinted less. Frequently changing information (GB Listing, Fee Schedules, etc.) will be available on line for new members to review.
- On July 1 we started working on a new program to give our members the ability to make On-Line Payments. We expect this to be completed and available for use by Wednesday, July12.
- Reporting on the new RHJ Pool Project has been a very popular topic with our members. They are very interested in learning about the latest construction updates and seeing the most recent pictures of the new pool.
Environmental Services:
- Deer Valley Golf Course reopens tomorrow, Tuesday, July 11 following summer maintenance.
- Desert Trails Golf Course closes today, July 10 and reopens after fall overseeding.
- Trail Ridge Golf Course closes on Thursday July 13 and reopens on Tuesday, July 18.
- Reminder: Grandview Golf Course closed down for summer maintenance on Monday, May 29 will reopen after fall overseeding on October 17. The Bunker Project is coming along. 250 tons of sand are being delivered every day until the Bunker Project is finished.
- Landscape Maintenance continues trimming palm trees and has completed all but the palm trees at Desert Trails and Grandview. We have enough left in the budget to complete those and to skin some of the palm trees along R. H. Johnson.
- We are almost finished with the iron work in the R. H. Johnson Courtyard planters and will add the plants once that work has been completed. Expect this project to be completed on September 6.
Golf Operations:
- Rounds for the month of July are down about 400 so far which is about $5,000 in revenue over prior year. We attribute most of this to the prolonged, excessive heat we’ve been experiencing.
- We are taking the opportunity to repair carts in the fleet at this time.
- We are in the process of redesigning scorecards and obtaining sponsorships.
Human Resources:
- The first draft of the new Employee Handbook is being reviewed.

Mon & Tue Aug 14 & 15 THE DRY HEAT BAND, 7 pm at the Stardust Theater, The Dry Heat Band is from the Northwest Valley area of Phoenix and performs a variety of music from western, country, folk, bluegrass, old standards and gospel. They style their performances to the entertainment needs of the audience, using a bit of humor, some interaction and audience participation. Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased online at suncitywest.com or at the RH Johnson Box Office 8 am – 3pm.
Wed Aug 23 SIZZLING SINATRA SUMMER SPECIAL, 5 pm, Palm Ridge Recreation Center, Tickets for the cabaret-style show are just $5 per person and go on sale July 18 at the R.H. Johnson Box Office or online at suncitywest.com. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and the event is open to the public. Beverages will be available or BYOB and bring your own snacks. The melodies.
