Subject: Weekly Activity Report – July 31, 2017
Projects:
- Bids for the R.H. Johnson Sports Pavilion Shuffleboard Acoustical Ceiling Tile Project are expected in this Thursday.
- The R. H. Johnson Phase 4 Enhancement Project update: Concrete complete from the Sports Pavilion through Pool Entry. Activity Center demolition to begin on 8/7.
- The Palm Ridge Summit Hall Floor Screen & Seal begins today, 7/31 and will reopen for scheduled activities 8/5.
- H. Johnson Library Carpet and Paint Project Phase 1 of 3 is complete. Phase two begins today, 7/31.
- We will be meeting with Dig Studios on site on 7/31 to review the Tennis Facility Masterplan for RCSCW approval.
Sports Pavilion:
- Sunday’s Special brought in $477 and Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $387 in revenue.
- The Sports Pavilion closed today for Summer Maintenance and reopens on Monday, August 14.
Recreation:
- Our Summer Series events continue on Monday, August 14 and Tuesday, August 15 featuring the Dry Heat Band at 7 p.m. at the Stardust Theater. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased online at suncitywest.com or at the R. h. Johnson Box office from 8 a.m.to 3 p.m.
Library:
- The library carpet and paint project is proceeding nicely and is currently ahead of schedule. We plan to reopen the Data Resource Center by the end of this week. Library patrons have been visiting the small library outlet in the Stampede Meeting Room of the Men’s Club.
- The Friends of the Library hold their regular August Book Sale this Saturday, August 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the R. H. Johnston Social Hall. In addition to the usual wide variety of books, jigsaw puzzles, audio books, and CDs, the Friends say there will be an incredible number of DVDs, including everything from recent movies to old black and white TV series and westerns. In addition, over 20 “Great Courses” DVDE/study book sets will be available at significant savings.
Financial Services:
- Our Annual Financial Audit begins today and goes through next week.
- We ended the year very well financially; revenue was at budget and expenses were held in check.
General Services:
- Virtual Reality demonstrations have moved to Palm Ridge beginning Friday, 8/4/17, followed by 8/11 and 8/18.
- Local news stations Channel 12 and Channel 15 were out to the R. H. Johnson Activity Center to watch resident Lake Westphal celebrate his 95th birthday on the racquetball courts. Congratulations Lake!
- The deadline for the September Rec. Center News is August 4. This issue will include a section dedicated to the R. H. Johnson Pool Project.
Village Store:
- The Village Store will be closing on Monday, 7/31/17 at 1:00 p.m. and reopens on Tuesday, 9//5/17. During this time we will be doing some housekeeping and inventorying.
Environmental Services:
- Pebblebrook Golf Course opens tomorrow, 8/1 following summer maintenance.
- Echo Mesa closes Thursday, 8/8 for maintenance and reopens on Tuesday, 8/8. That leaves one more course scheduled for aerification before we go into fall overseeding.
- Reminder: Grandview Golf Course closed down for summer maintenance on Monday, May 29 will reopen after fall overseeding on October 17. The Bunker Project remains on schedule. The greenside bunkers are complete and we expect the fairway bunkers will be completed this week. Completion date for the Bunker Project is 9/8/17.
- We received from ½” to 1” of rain over the weekend. Heavier rain fell at Pebblebrook Golf Course.
- We remain down 15 employees in the Golf Maintenance Division. We continue placing ads in the local papers, on internet sites and with the Dept. of Economic Security as well as with other venues.
- Landscape Maintenance is working on the back side of the R. H. Johnson Facility.
- Landscaping outside the R. H. Johnson Library is completed. We may add two additional trees in that area.
Golf Operations:
- Rounds for the month of July so far are down about 450 for the same time period last year and about $8,000 in revenue over prior year. We attribute most of this to the continued excessive heat and the monsoon weather we’ve been experiencing.
- Golf Operations will be checking range equipment and performing preventive Maintenance on Carts to get ready for the upcoming season.
- We will be meeting with other local golf courses (Pebble Creek, SC Grand) to compare golf statistics.
Human Resources:
- Only 4 people clicked on the Greenskeeper ads we posted with the Department of Economic Security (DES) and of those 4, no one applied.
- We are working to ensure that all new labor and employment laws are included in our procedures and properly followed. The Employee Handbook is being updated as well.
Management:
- We are in the process of calculating our loss due to the storm damage last week. The total cost for cleanup was $146,000 of which $129,000 was for tree replacement. This does not include the damage to the Beardsley Gazebo which we are still working on.

.Mon & Tue Aug 14 & 15 THE DRY HEAT BAND, 7 pm at the Stardust Theater, The Dry Heat Band is from the Northwest Valley area of Phoenix and performs a variety of music from western, country, folk, bluegrass, old standards and gospel. They style their performances to the entertainment needs of the audience, using a bit of humor, some interaction and audience participation. Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased online at suncitywest.com or at the RH Johnson Box Office 8 am – 3 pm.
Wed Aug 23 SOLD OUT SIZZLING SINATRA SUMMER SPECIAL, 5 pm, Palm Ridge Recreation Center, Tickets for the cabaret-style show are just $5 per person and go on sale July 18 at the R.H. Johnson Box Office or online at suncitywest.com. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and the event is open to the public. Beverages will be available or BYOB and bring your own snacks. The melodies. Look for the soft opening of the RH Johnson Swim and Fitness Complex on August 28th.
The GRAND OPENING is scheduled for the weekend of Sept 16th.
Re: Tennis Facility Master Plan
What is status of and details of the Master Plan that is awaiting approval?
The timetable of Phase One and Two and the plan to verify user acceptance of the Post Stress Surface and valid verification of usage is important for such a major expenditure .
We should allow sufficient time to evaluate these aspects of the project before committing to Phase Two!
Hello Dudley. The current status of Tennis Facility Master Plan is that Dig Studios has officially submitted plans to Maricopa County as of Aug. 4. It is their understanding it will be 2-3 weeks for 1st review. The Plans will be sent to the bidding vendors today. The timetable discussed yesterday by RCSCW Staff is that once approval by Maricopa County is complete and proposals are in from vendors, we would like to proceed with 1st phase of construction on courts #8-16 between Sept. and Oct. of this year. Upon completion of Phase 1, and after user acceptance of those courts, we will then evaluate the response to determine the course of action for Phase 2.
