Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – January 30, 2017

 

Projects:

  1. Running Construction poured both slabs last week for the 8 new Pickle Ball Courts at the R.H. Johnson Facility. Forms have been stripped.  Court fencing is expected to go up this week.  Plumbers will be on site running their line to the hose bibs and drinking fountain.

 

  1. Foresite Construction has demolished the entire area at the R. H. Johnson pool site. Both the pool and spa have been removed and the area is being graded.  They will begin laying out the new pool this week.

 

  1. Running Construction will begin the layout of landscape lighting at the Beardsley Meditation Garden at the Beardsley Facility this week. Todd Patty’s crew has been busy with installing various plants in the area.  As weather permits, trees will soon be planted at the garden.

 

  1. Fabric Wall concepts is working on a proposal to install sound proofing material at the Beardsley Aquatic Facility based on a sound study that was conducted by Acoustical Consulting Services.

 

  1. NORCON Industries completed the installation of the new end panels on the Kuentz Theater seating. This was covered under the five-year warranty agreement.

 

Recreation:

  1. Our next So You Think You Have Talent at Kuentz Courtyard is tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 11:00 a.m. The Back Row Boys, Frank and Doug, provide the entertainment.

 

  1. Our Real Tones Dance on Friday, Jan. 27 at Palm Ridge was well attended and everyone seemed to have a good time.

 

  1. Happy Hour is from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Kuentz Courtyard on Wed., Feb. 8. Ice and coffee are provided.  You can bring your own beverages and a chair!

 

  1. 43 people attended our escorted walking path tour at Beardsley on January 28.

 

  1. We are holding our workshops for “On Line Ticket Buying” at the Data Resource Center in the Library for those needing help in learning to purchase tickets on line.

 

Sports Pavilion:

  1. We continue to be busy on the weekends. Our Sunday Special brought in $791 in revenue and Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $174 and 53 are signed up to attend our Big Bowl Party on Sunday, February 5.

 

Village Store: 

  1. Arts & Crafts Fair packets are ready for participating clubs in the upcoming Spring Arts & Crafts Fair scheduled for Saturday, March 18, 2017

 

  1. Sales at the Village Store on Saturday were very good for this time of the year.

 

  1. The Clay Club had its “Pot Party” at Beardsley this past weekend and did very well.

 

Library:

  1. Friends of the Library Book Sale will be held at the Social Hall on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are many items that will be offered for sale including over 3,000 “gently used” CD’s.

 

  1. Ed Allen’s presentation of the Sun City West story in “Lizard Acres to Lush Oasis” was well attended. There was a full house in the Lecture Hall and comments made by several attendees saying how much they enjoyed hearing Ed speak.

 

  1. Lisa Schnebly Heidinger, great-grand daughter of Sedona Schnebly, presented “Sedona: From Cucumbers to Leavenworth” on Wednesday, January 25 in the R. H. Johnson Lecture Hall.  This presentation was also attended by a full house.  Many commented they would like to have Lisa back for another presentation next year.

 

  1. The Library Information Center created a handout to assist residents explaining how to go about preparing for on-line voting.

 

Golf Operations:

  1. Revenue so far for the month of January 2017 was down $50,000 compared to same time-period last year but we are on track with the budget year to date.

 

  1. The phones at Stardust Golf Course were not working over the weekend. Gregg got them back up and running and is attempting to find out what caused the outage.

 

Environmental Services:

  1. There is only one month before the LPGA Legends Event takes place at Grandview Golf Course. We have lots of preparation work to accomplish!

 

  1. We have had frost delays last week and over the weekend. There were cart path restrictions this morning for half an hour which did not impact the courses to any great degree.

 

  1. Landscape Maintenance has started doing the electrical trench work to the trees for the Beardsley Meditation Garden. The first delivery of plants for the Garden are going in and weather permitting we expect to begin planting the trees in about 1 ½ weeks.

 

Financial Services:

  1. A new Key Fob printer has been installed at Member Services. The Key Fobs printed will now have the owner member’s picture on them which enhances their use.

 

  1. Our new Financial Accountant, Timothy DeAngelo joins our Financial Services Dept. on Monday, February 6, 2017. Be sure to stop in and welcome Tim on board!

 

  1. Tony continues working with staff and the B&F Committee on the FY 17/18 Capital Budget.

 

  1. Two new Member Services employees started last week. We Welcome Gail Selander and Jan Graf.

 

Human Resources:

  1. All employees are reminded to attend the Annual OSHA Training Jim Heger has scheduled for Feb. 6, 7 & 8 in the RH Johnson Social Hall. This training is mandatory for all employees.  Class times have been modified to accommodate as many people as possible.

 

Management:

  1. We have received financial reports for 60 of our 110 chartered clubs and hope to have the rest in by Feb. 01, 2017.

 Mon  Jan 23                                       JAM SESSION,  1-3 pm, Kuentz Courtyard. Join us on from 1 to 3 p.m. for two hours of entertainment in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join in or just sit back and relax and enjoy the music. This starts our third season. If you play a string instrument or other similar instruments join in on the fun. Sat Feb 4                                            GIGANTIC BOOK SALE, 8 am – 2pm, RH Johnson Social Hall. This sale will include more than 5,000 books of all categories, including Western and Civil War, cook books, biography, fiction and non-fiction, arts and crafts, biography, oversize (such as coffee table books), miscellaneous, children’s books, large print and audio/video. The tables will be continually resupplied as the sale progresses, so you won’t be disappointed. Please bring cash or a check (no credit cards) and enjoy bargain hunting in the Social Hall. Thu Feb 9                                           LINACRE & KNIGHT, 3 & 7 pm.  Palm Ridge Recreation Center.  Enjoy a fresh, new look at London’s West End and Broadway show tunes through their amazing voices, world renown Linacre & Knights come together to share some of their favorite musical masterpieces, including featured songs from hit Broadway shows like “Les Miserables,” “Phantom of the Opera,” and many more! Fri Feb 10                                          FEBRUARY DANCE with YESTERDAY ONCE MORE, 7pm, Palm Ridge Recreation Center.   This event is SOLD OUT!

 

 Sat Feb 11                                          ARC CAR SHOW, 8 am – 2pm RH Johnson Parking Lot.  If you enjoy 250 to 300 cars of all kinds and from every era, then this is the car show for you. This year the ARC has added a category for golf carts. Stop by the ARC Building for a registration form. Come enjoy a day of cars, trucks, food and entertainment. Raffle tickets will be on sale for a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire, a complete home AC/Heating system from Sun City Mechanical or $3,000 cash, an appliance package from Associated Appliance Sales, and many other raffle items. Car Show hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is free for the general public. Everyone is invited to bring a can of food to donate to the Food Bank.

Sat Feb 18                                          US AIR  FORCE  JAZZ BAND-THE COMMANDERS,  Beardsley Park, 1 pm.  This event is free and open to the public.  Please bring your own chair.  Soda, hot dogs, chips, popcorn and ice cream will be available for purchase at the event. The Commanders, a newly revived ensemble coming from the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West, carries on the American musical tradition of the great big bands, yet offers a lot more than the big band sounds. This energetic group of highly trained, professional musicians formed from 18 airmen and delivers the full gamut of jazz music – traditional jazz, cool, bop, swing, Broadway favorites and patriotic music

 

Thu Feb 23                                         WINTER DANCE PARTY, 3 & 7pm, Palm Ridge Recreation Center, John Mueller’s “Winter Dance Party” is the official live and authentic re-creation of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper’s final tour and the only show endorsed by the Holly, Valens and Richardson estates. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased online at Suncitywet.com or at our Box Office at the RH Johnson Rec Center.  Box Office hours are 8 am-3 pm Mon – Fri.

 

Sat & Sun Feb 25 & 26                     Palo Verde Patchers 10th anniversary Quilt Show – Legacy of Quilts. 9 am – 4pm Palm Ridge Recreation Center.  Free and Open to the Public.  Each day will include a boutique, antique quilt walk, a spring bling exhibit, a quilt appraiser and a quilt raffle. The entry fee is $3 and lunch can be purchased. This show will feature Brenda Archambault as the guest Fiber Arts Quilter. She will exhibit some of her weaving and needlework along with a multitude of quilts and wearable art.

  

Saturdays                                           URBAN TRAIL ESCORTED HIKES,   am.  Join us on an escorted hike on one of our designated Urban Trails.  The Urban Trail Guide is online at www.suncitywest.com or pick up a brochure at any Rec Center.  Committee members who created the guides are excited to formally unveil the routes as they invite community members to walk with them beginning in January. All walks will begin 9 a.m. Saturday mornings, starting at the recreation center from which the routes originate. Members wishing to join the walking tours should meet up with the day’s guide near the fitness center of the designated rec center. There are expected to be two guides per walk, and the Rec Centers will provide bottled water to get started. The schedule of walks is as follows:
