Subject:         Weekly Activity Report – January 23, 2017

Projects:

  1. Running Construction has pulverized the asphalt, graded the area, laid the ABC fill, compacted the area, set forms, roughed in the electrical, laid the vapor barrier, set the sleeves for the net post and installed the post tension cabling for the eight new Pickle Ball courts. All phases have been inspected to date by the County Inspector.  Weather permitting, they will pour one of the court slabs this week.

 

  1. Foresite Construction has installed the security fence around the R.H. Johnson Pool Project and started their prep work. The pool has been drained.  Demolition on the four upper Bocce courts and all the pool decking has been completed.  The Volley Ball area has been removed and graded.  Debris is being trucked out and demolition on the pool started this morning.

 

  1. Running Construction has completed all concrete work on the Meditation Garden at Beardsley. The fountain has been placed and is operational.  The stabilized granite walkway has been installed.  Pavers have been set in place.

 

  1. Ken Eller with Archi-CAD Architects had the Pre-App Meeting with Maricopa County on January 10 regarding the ARC paint booth addition. Everything went well and the County gave the architect the go-ahead to proceed with plan submittal.  Engineers are wrapping up their information to submit to Ken so he can finalize the plans which he hopes will be ready for submittal the first week in February.  Plans will also be distributed to bidders at the same time as they are submitted to the County.

 

  1. Fabric Wall concepts is working on a proposal to install sound proofing material at the Beardsley Aquatic Facility based on a sound study that was conducted by Acoustical Consulting Services.

 

  1. Precise Signs has received confirmation from Maricopa County that the two remaining signs for the Village Store and Sport Pavilion have been approved. They need a letter acknowledging that the sign lighting will be turned off at 10 p.m..  They are sending over the letter for Larry’s signature this morning.  Once signed and returned, they will take it to the County and pick up the permit and put the signs into production.  The company will send us an estimated time for installation.

 

  1. NORCON Industries has received the new end panels for the Kuentz Theater seats. NORCON was scheduled to be here January 24th and 25th to install the replacement end panels but showed up today to begin this project.

 

  1. DFG Builders has submitted the revised proposal for the re-facing of the two raised planters in the Admin. Courtyard and have received the okay to move forward with the completion of that project. Fabrication of the steel work has a lead-time of 6 weeks and the fabricated cap seating has a lead time of 10 weeks.  All February events will have been completed by the time this project starts.

 

Recreation:

  1. Our next So You Think You Have Talent at Kuentz Courtyard is tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 11:00 a.m. Entertainment is provided by singer Maureen Lansing.

 

  1. Our Real Tones Dance on Friday, Jan. 27 at Palm Ridge is sold out!

 

  1. Ticket sales for our Cruise Ship and Top Hat Series of events for this season have been good and many of these performances have been sold out.

 

  1. Our escorted walking path tours started on Saturday, Jan. 14 and have been well received by members of the community. Our next escorted tour is scheduled for Saturday, January 28 at Beardsley.

 

  1. The Pickleball drop on Saturday was a success and raised $17,000 for the Sun City West Foundation.

 

  1. Attendance is up at all our Fitness Centers!

 

  1. Congratulations go out to Dan Journey Facility Assistant at the R. H. Johnson Rec. Center. Dan climbed Mount Kilimanjaro…he was not only the oldest in his group but the first to reach the top!  Way to go Dan!

 

Sports Pavilion:

  1. We continue to be busy on the weekends. Our Sunday Special brought in $562 in revenue and Saturday saw $465 this weekend.  Last Tuesday’s Bowling Special brought in $222 and 46 are signed up to attend our Big Bowl Party on Sunday, February 5.

 

  1. On January 14 & 15 we hosted the USBC Phoenix Senior Open. 342 bowlers participated in this event and there were three 300 games bowled during this tournament.  Revenue for this event was $7,800.
  2. Congratulations go out to Mike Watt of the Pioneer League. Mike bowled his second 300 game last week!

 

Village Store: 

  1. We are preparing the packet for participating clubs in the upcoming Spring Arts & Crafts Fair scheduled for Saturday, March 18, 2017.

 

Library:

  1. World War II in the Pacific was presented by Author Paul McDevitt at 10 a.m. on January 11 in the Lecture Hall. His book “All Came Home” was named 2016 USA Best Book Awards Finalist.  Paul spoke about WWII, his father, and his father’s ship the U.S.S. Leon.  His presentation was so well received that we have invited him to return next year.

 

  1. Friends of the Library presents Ed Allen as he tells the Sun City West story in “Lizard Acres to Lush Oasis”. His presentation is at 1:30 p.m. today (Jan. 23) in the Lecture Hall.  All are Welcome.

 

  1. Lisa Schnebly Heidinger presents “Sedona: From Cucumbers to Leavenworth” at 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 25 in the R. H. Johnson Lecture Hall.  Lisa is the great-granddaughter of Sedona Schnebly for whom the city of Sedona was named after.  She also wrote “Arizona:  100 Years Grand” which was the Official Book of the Arizona Centennial.  This presentation is made possible by a grant from the Arizona Humanities Council

 

General Services:

  1. The deadline for the Hometown Heroes nominations is up this week. Please submit any nominations you have to the Independent.

 

  1. About 1,000 people attended the two seminars we sponsored on Alzheimer’s Research. Our first swabbing clinic is scheduled for Monday, January 30 in the Data Resource Center.  Anyone interested should call 602-230-2273 for an appointment.

 

Golf Operations:

  1. Revenue so far for the month of January 2017 was down $34,000 compared to same time-period last year but is up for the fiscal year ($50,000).

 

  1. It is with sadness that we report that long time employee Joe Papay passed away this weekend. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family.

 

  1. Our Michelob Challenge event was cancelled on Saturday due to inclement weather. 100 golfers had signed up for this event.  We will reschedule in the near future.

 

  1. We will be hiring two more PAs due to vacancies. We are also going through the hiring process for Pete Roberto’s replacement at PB/SD Pro Shops.

 

Environmental Services:

  1. We have not had to use our water irrigation system since Dec. 19, 2016 (36 days). We received 1” to 1 ½” of rain since Friday and we expect additional rain today and/or tomorrow.  This is the longest period of time we have not had to water our courses.

 

  1. We expect possible frost delays beginning Wednesday of this week.
  2. Greens aerification was completed on Deer Valley Golf Course. The next course to be aerified are Stardust and Grandview.  This will not affect play at any of our golf courses.

 

  1. Landscape Maintenance has started doing the electrical trench work to the trees for the Beardsley Meditation Garden. We’ve received the first delivery of plants for the Garden but have delayed planting them due to the weather.  We will attempt to plant them next week.

 

  1. Our Landscape Maintenance Foreman, Robert Pena will be retiring Jan 27, 2017. We want to thank Robert for his 29 years of service to the Association and the great job he and his crew continually did taking care of the landscaping and flowers throughout the Rec. Centers.  He will be missed.

 

Financial Services:

  1. We will be moving Debra Long into the lead role in Member Services. She can be reached at 544-6001 or membership@suncitywest.com .  Nancy Beam will be retiring on Feb. 3, 2017 with Teri Wood filling in for that position.  Mary leaves us on Feb. 10, 2017 and we have hired two new Member Services employees to fill both of those vacancies.

 

  1. Our new Financial Accountant, Timothy DeAngelo joins our Financial Services Dept. on Monday, February 6, 2017. Be sure to stop in and welcome Tim on board!

 

  1. Tony continues working on the FY 17/18 Capital Budget.

  1. All employees are to attend the Annual OSHA Training Jim Heger has scheduled for Feb. 6, 7 & 8 in the RH Johnson Social Hall. This training is mandatory for all employees.  Class times have been modified to accommodate as many people as possible

  1. We have completed financial reports for 43 of our 110 chartered clubs and hope to have the rest completed by Feb. 01, 2017

                                                            Join us for our sixth season highlighting many new acts and all of your old favorites! Join us in the Kuentz Courtyard starting at 11 a.m. Tuesdays for an hour of fun.  Our lineup for January is:

Mon  Jan 23                                 JAM SESSION,  1-3 pm, Kuentz Courtyard. Join us on from 1 to 3 p.m. for two hours of entertainment in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join in or just sit back and relax and enjoy the music. This starts our third season. If you play a string instrument or other similar instruments join in on the fun. We supply sound and chairs for the musicians. This is open to SCW residents and guests. For questions or information, contact Dori Miller at 623- 544-6193.

 

Wed Jan 25                                     HAPPY HOUR, 6-8 pm Kuentz Courtyard.  This event is free and is for residents and their invited guests.  Bring your own beverage and snacks.  Ice and Coffee are provided.  You may bring your own chair.  Jan. 25 6 to 8 p.m. – YesterYear  YesterYear was established in 2003 in a small mountain community called Pine Mountain Club and will create new memories with classic rock and country music from your past. This group of established musicians has played with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Santana and many others. They continue to perform of festivals, weddings, and night clubs

Saturdays                                          URBAN TRAIL ESCORTED HIKES,   9 am.  Join us on an escorted hike on one of our designated Urban Trails.  The Urban Trail Guide is online at www.suncitywest.com or pick up a brochure at any Rec Center.  Committee members who created the guides are excited to formally unveil the routes as they invite community members to walk with them beginning in January. All walks will begin 9 a.m. Saturday mornings, starting at the recreation center from which the routes originate. Members wishing to join the walking tours should meet up with the day’s guide near the fitness center of the designated rec center. There are expected to be two guides per walk, and the Rec Centers will provide bottled water to get started. The schedule of walks is as follows:
