If you missed Abe Lincoln’s last visit to Sun City West, you’ll want to make sure to mark your calendar for Feb. 26 when he returns with his wife for a one-act play!
The Friends of the R.H. Johnson Library are presenting this free lecture featuring spot-on Abe Lincoln impersonator John Voehl, who will be joined by “Mary” (Pamela Voehl) for this special engagement at 2 p.m. on Feb. 26 at the Palm Ridge Recreation Center. Doors for the lecture open at 1:30 p.m. Free tickets are available at the R.H. Johnson Library.
Listen in as Abe and Mary enjoy their last full conversation the evening of Good Friday, April 14, 1865, just before they leave the White House for Ford’s Theatre. In this one-act play, Abe and Mary discuss their plans for the future – retirement from politics, travel in Europe, and enjoying time with their two surviving sons. They recall the drama and heartbreak of the Civil War as it drew to a close, and how the country might be reunited in its aftermath. The play also showcases the wide and sudden swings of Mary’s temperament.
As history knows, the couple’s plans were cut short later that night at Ford’s Theater, where Abe was assassinated.
John Voehl has been appearing as Lincoln since 1996, having given more than 1,670 presentations with appearances in all 50 states. His first-person historical accounts give new perspective to the rich and intriguing stories of Abraham Lincoln.
