 Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – April 8, 2019

 

Facility Projects:

  1. Status of the R. H. Johnson Small Dog Park Upgrade and Addition; The tentative closure of the Small Dog Park has been scheduled for April 15 through June 30.

 

  1. The Beardsley Facility Aquatics Parking Lot is scheduled for closure April 15 and 16 for seal and stripe of the asphalt.

 

  1. The Kuentz Liberty Softball Field will be closed April 15 through May 24 for artificial turf replacement and the installation of a Cantilever Canopy.

 

Facility Maintenance:

  1. We are currently short one out of two plumbers due to a retirement. We are recruiting to fill this position.

 

  1. The leak detector company was not successful locating the leak at the R.H. Johnson Spa. The vendor will be back out on April 17th to make another attempt.  The R. H. Johnson Spa will be closed that day.

 

  1. We are finishing up some work at the ARC Building on the installation of lines for their air-powered equipment and adding cameras.

 

  1. The ARC Building Designation number was removed and relocated to the other side of the building. It will be painted and powder coated with one of our logo colors.

 

  1. A vendor will be out to fix and make adjustments to the retractable dividing wall in the Social Hall. When initially installed the moving mechanisms were getting hung up on the ceiling tiles making it difficult to move.

 

  1. We are installing the trim on the men’s restroom door in the Social Hall. Painting and some grout work is all that is left to complete on this ADA project.

 

Recreation:

  1. Join us for our SCW Talent Spotlight on Wednesdays in the Kuentz Courtyard starting at 11 am for an hour of fun!  If you have any questions, call Phil Dauterive 623-544-6193.  The remaining talent lineup for the month of April is:

  1. We continue working with the Governing Board on Chartered Clubs needs regarding Space Utilization plans. We expect this information to be presented at the next Governing Board Workshop on Friday, April 12 in the Lecture Hall.

 

  1. Check out our Jam Session on April 22 at 1:00 p.m. in the Kuentz Courtyard for two hours of entertainment. Join in and play or just sit back and relax and enjoy the music. If you play a stringed instrument or other similar instruments join in on the fun. We supply sound and chairs for the musicians. This is open to Sun City West residents and guests. This is our last month for Jam Session until October.  For questions, contact Phil Dauterive at 623-544-6193.

 

  1. We will be interviewing 4 Wellness/Fitness vendors next week.

 

  1. Our next Newcomers orientation is scheduled for 4/18/19.

 

Sports Pavilion:

  1. We had another 300 game this weekend which is the 16th 300 game of the season at Johnson Lanes. Congratulations go to out to Mike Maynard of the Classic League!

 

  1. Our Sunday Special brought in $710.

 

  1. Most of our winter leagues will be finished up this week. 40 bowlers have signed up for our upcoming Summer League.

 

  1. 160 have signed up for our Junior/Senior Bowling Tournament on May 4 and 5. Participation is double what it was last year.

 

General Services:

  1. Beginning April 8, members who would like to store their Membership Card on their cell phones can download the Stocard App which will allow for your card to be scanned from your cell phone when entering the facilities. You cannot simply take a picture of your card as it will not work with the scanners we have installed. So far the system is working well however, you may want to continue to bring your membership cards with you until you are sure the digital card is working.

 

  1. We have asked our Multi-Media Specialist Martin to create more “How To” videos to help members navigate through our website and other issues. The last video created was for On-Line Voting.  Watch for the availability of these in the future.

 

  1. The Maricopa County Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a hearing about the new K-Hovnanian Homes Development in sun City West 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 11 at the Board of Supervisors Auditorium at 295 W. Jefferson St., Phoenix. If approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission, it will be formally voted on by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 8 at the Board of Supervisor’s Auditorium, same location as above.

 

  1. Trilogy contacted us to learn more about our On-Line Voting Program.

 

 

RHJ Library:

  1. A. Jance presented a book talk and signing last Friday at the Palm Ridge Rec. Center to about 133 people.

 

  1. Jessica Parks, a representative of Valley Metro will be in the library on Tuesday of this week from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to survey patrons about their transportation needs.

 

  1. On Wednesday, April 10, the library will repeat the Tame the Tiger Apple smartphones and tablets will be covered at 10 a.m. and android smartphones and tablets will be covered at 12:30 p.m. These classes fill up very quickly, so we plan to offer them once each month.

 

  1. New York Times Bestselling author Anne Hillerman the daughter of the late Author Tony Hillerman will present a book talk and signing on Thursday, April 11 at 10:00 a.m. n the Social Hall-West. Doors will open at 9:15 a.m. for residents with a Rec. Card and at 9:30 a.m. for the general public.  All are welcome and tickets are not required.  Her books, including her newest, “Tale Teller” will be available for purchase at the event.

 

  1. The Friends of the Library invite all members to attend a regular board meeting at the library at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday April 11.

 

  1. Two sessions of Virtual Reality will be presented on Friday of this week. Small groups provide the best experience, so preregistration is required.  Interested residents may call the Data Resource Center at 623-544-6644 to reserve a specific time.

 

 

Financial Services:

  1. Staff is requested to submit any outstanding invoices for March so that Accounting can complete their Month End Reports.

 

  1. We continue our work on the FY 19/20 Budget and to finalize the Capital and Budget Presentation.

 

  1. The dates for the upcoming Public Budget Forums for the FY 19/20 Annual Budget Presentations to the public are scheduled for Wed. April 24, 9 a.m. at Palm Ridge Summit B, Fri. April 26, 1 p.m. at the Lecture Hall, and Thurs., May 2, 5:30 p.m. at the Lecture Hall. Watch the Rec. Center News, E-News and our web site for additional information and be sure to attend one of these presentations.

 

 

Membership:

  1. Fiscal Year to Date through March we had 807 APF fees for 2019 as compared to 872 for 2018 which puts us down 65 Fiscal Year to Date. We may make a dent in that number as Member Services has processed about 43 for the first 3 days of April and they are processing many more APF Fees this week.

 

  1. 2,800 statements were sent out for May dues.

 

  1. We are working on getting pictures into the system for members who do not have their picture on file.

 

 

Events Planning:

  1. Movies in Beardsley Park – There was a misprint in the April Rec. Center News. The corrected dates and titles of the movies are:

 

  • April 20th – Green Book
  • April 27th – The Mule
  • May 4th – Bohemian Rhapsody
  • May 11th – First Man

 

  1. Our next Culture Series features John Gamber on April 17 on the Great Lawn at 6 p.m. Tickets are not required for this event.

 

  1. Tickets are still available for our April Dance “Yesterday Once More”, April 12, 7 p.m. at Palm Ridge.

 

  1. Tickets are still available for our Easter in the Park Event, April 20 at 8:30 a.m. at Beardsley. Be sure to bring the Grandkids over to meet the Easter Bunny!

 

  1. Tickets go on sale April 16 for our Memorial Day – Uptown Angels Event scheduled May 27 at Palm Ridge.

Golf Maintenance:

  1. Deer Valley Golf Course will close this Thursday April 11 for spring aerification and reopen on Tuesday April 16.

 

  1. A Golf Course Maintenance Field Day is scheduled with the Golf Committee this Thursday, April 11 at Deer Valley Golf Course.  Topics will include greens and fairway aerification, summer projects and spring transition.

 

  1. Aerification has been completed on all four lawn bowls courts. Greens #1 and #2 reopened last Thursday.  Greens #3 and #4 will reopen this Thursday, 4-11-19.

 

 

Golf Operations:

  1. We are 3% ahead in revenue and 6% ahead in rounds.

 

  1. 88 golfers participated in the Nadaburg Tournament which was a fundraiser for teachers. This year $3,600 was raised.  We have hosted this fundraiser for five years.

 

  1. Our Player Assistant Program and Call Center will operate through April 26, 2019.

 

  1. Stargazing in the Park is an upcoming EXPLORE Class. For $20 you can sign up to view the moon, the planets and deep space objects like star cluster, nebulae and galaxies through telescopes at Pebblebrook Golf Course on Thursday, April 11 from 7:30 to 9:30.  The class includes an outdoor presentation on the night sky followed by telescope viewing.
