Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – April 09, 2018

 

Facility Projects:

  1. RHJ Tennis Mater Plan is in progress. Large structures have been removed and excavation is completed.  Light poles are now being installed.

 

  1. The ARC Paint Booth plan revisions have been completely approved by Maricopa Planning and Development. This project will resume the week of 4/9/18.

 

  1. The walkway safety issue at the RHJ Maintenance Entry and Social Hall walkway has been repaired. The old concrete was torn out and poured on 4/7/18.  This project is complete.

 

  1. The Palm Ridge Pool Deck Resurface/Trench Drain Project was awarded to DFG Builders.

 

  1. The RHJ Tennis Restroom Expansion Project was awarded to K.L. McIntyre.

 

  1. The Kuentz Backstage Restroom Remodel was awarded to Dereck Engineering.

 

Facility Maintenance:

  1. The Governing Board Office/Conference Room Air Conditioning Unit went down. Facility Maintenance staff were able to make a temporary fix until a new unit is delivered and installed.

 

  1. There is some warranty work that needs to be scheduled at the R. H. Johnson Pool within the next three to four weeks. This includes replacement of a dead palm tree, repair of a minor water leak and repair/replacement of a heating flue.  It will be necessary to close the pool for 3 to 4 days during that time.  Once we have determined the closure dates we will post the information.

 

  1. The electricity for the lights at the Large Dog Park are tapped into three different power sources at other facilities which is not the best set up. We will need to run conduit to the Dog Park in the near future so we can access additional circuits to provide that area with reliable electricity.

 

Recreation:

  1. So You Think You Have Talent continues Tuesday, April 10, 11 a.m. at the Kuentz Courtyard. Entertainment is provided by the Spicy Ukers, singers and ukuleleists.

 

  1. Come join us at our next Jam Session on Monday, April 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Kuentz Courtyard for two hours of entertainment!

 

  1. Our next Happy Hour is scheduled for Wednesday, April 11 on the great lawn. The show is free and kicks off at 6 p.m.  Join us for some great entertainment!

 

  1. Tickets for our Top Hat and Cruise Ship Series of Events are close to being sold out.

 

  1. Ticket sales for Fall Fest scheduled for Thursday,11/01/18 (Eagles) and Friday, 11/02/18 (Beatles) are going well.

 

Sports Pavilion:

  1. Sunday’s Bowling Special brought in $686.

 

  1. We had three 300 games bowled last week! Congratulations go out to David Massey, Dennis Klein and Dennis Barnes of the Pioneer League!  Great job guys!

 

  1. There are 42 Bowling VIP Tickets sold.

 

Library:

  1. The Friends of the R. H. Johnson Library presented the film Darkest Hour last Saturday at the Stardust theater for those people who were not able to see the movie in March.

 

  1. The last “Chat with Local Authors” of the season will be held between 10:00 a.m. and noon tomorrow and will feature Sun City West resident Susan Finlay. She has published nine books.  Hew newest, “Breadcrumbs and Bombs”, is the first book in the “Tangled Roots” historical mystery series.

 

  1. The Friends of the Library will have a meeting for members at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 12 at the Library.

 

  1. The Macro-Knit Club will once again start a “knit-in” in the Main Room of the R. H. Johnson Library to demonstrate the many items the Club members craft for Phoenix area charities. They will display examples of their projects and accept donations of yarn, knitting needles, and crochet hooks between 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Thursday April 12.

 

  1. Morning and afternoon sessions of virtual reality will be held at the library on Friday, April 13.

 

Financial Services:

  1. CFO Tony Struck is working on the Presentation for our Public Budget Forums coming up on April 24, 26 and May 2. Please be sure to attend one of these Budget Forums and ask any questions you may have.

 

General Services;

  1. Over 500 people have participated in our Marketing Survey which closes at the end of this week. We look forward to additional responses through the rest of this week.  Members can fill out a paper version of the survey found the Rec. Center News and turn them in before 3 p.m. on April 13 to the Receptionist at the R. H. Johnson Administration Building.  We will release the results once all survey information has been compiled and analyzed.  Thank you to everyone who filled a survey out.

 

  1. Sun City West Clubs continue to transition to a faster server. Everything seems to be going well.

 

  1. We have submitted three nominations for Sun City West Recreation Programming to the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association for their consideration.

 

Golf Operations:

  1. 95 golfers participated in the 4th Annual Nadaburg Fund Raiser this past Saturday which helps teachers start new programs for their students.

 

  1. Golf revenue was up 2 ½% for the month of March but down 5% for the first week in April compared to last year at the same time.

 

Environmental Services:

  1. Golf Maintenance is gearing up for turf transition with the temperatures going up.

 

  1. We ordered more mosquito eating fish to add to our golf course lakes.

 

  1. We will be ordering 50 trees to plant in the Library section of the R. H. Johnson Parking Lot. We expect to begin the planting May 1.

 

  1. Unfortunately, one of our golfers was stung by 25 bees at Grandview Golf Course last week. We are working to see that the bees are removed.

 

  1. Environmental Services Manager Todd Patty is putting a plan together to remove the small orange trees along R. H. Johnson Blvd. We are leaning towards having them replaced with the yellow bird of paradise which are low maintenance and require little water.

                                                              April 17 – Singer/guitarist Tony Miller who loves parodies.  – Singer Betty Dorsey. Her voice is wonderful.

                                                              May 1 – Grand Finale with two hours of entertainment. Dori Miller will supply punch, cookies and watermelon. You bring a sandwich if you wish.

Mon, Apr 9 & 23                               JAM SESSIONS. Join us from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays, April 9 and 23, for two hours of entertainment in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join in or just sit back and relax and enjoy the music. If you play a string instrument or other similar instruments join in on the fun. We supply sound and chairs for the musicians. This is open to Sun City West residents and guests. This month is the last month of Jam Sessions. We start back up again in the fall Oct. 8. For questions, contact Dori Miller at 623-544-6193.

Wed, Apr 11                                      Head over to Palm Ridge Rec Center, 13800 W. Deer Valley Road, for a cabaret-style show featuring Paulette Rockir. “From Patsy Cline to Broadway,” Rockir’s one-woman show will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, at Palm Ridge. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are sold out. Non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Paulette is known for impersonating Ethel Merman, Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, Patsy Cline, Cher, Tina Turner, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Frankie Valli and the Bee Gees. She has entertained audiences in all five New York City boroughs with a career that spans more than 25 years from musical theater to night clubs, to large stages, retirement homes, lounges, private parties and more. Paulette has received many award and recognitions and many honorary mentions from the US Army, including the prestigious FORSCOM award. Not to mention many talking voices in a skit, which usually makes the audience howl with laughter.

Wed, Apr 11 & 25                             April Happy Hours on the R.H. Johnson Great Lawn Wednesday, April 11 and April 25. Each Happy Hour is from 6 to 8 p.m. and free to Sun City West residents and their guests.

The John Leo Group Get ready to dance on Wednesday, April 11 with The John Leo Group. The band proudly proclaims, “We play raunchy blues and rowdy rock ’n’ roll.” Playing blues classics and rock standards, as well as ’50s and ’60s dance tunes, The John Leo Group creates an atmosphere where the energy and fun are highly contagious. Put on your dancing shoes and join the party!

On April 25, enjoy the “big” voice of John Gamber on the Great Lawn. John’s guitar banjo playing talents are enhanced with his smile-invoking stories and humor. John has enjoyed a long career performing in the Valley, including serving as the opening act for the Drifters at the former Skye Restaurant. Mark your calendars now for this special performance. BYOB and lawn chairs – coffee and ice will be provided. Please, no pets – service animals only.

Thurs, Apr 19                                    New Comers Coffee and Orientation. Newcomers Coffee and Orientation is being held in the R.H. Johnson Social Hall April 19. New Sun City West residents are invited to a Newcomers Coffee and Orientation. This is an opportunity for new residents to learn about Sun City West Chartered Clubs and get acquainted with all the community has to offer. The doors open at 9 a.m. for residents to visit with the clubs and service groups until introduction of staff are made at 9:30 and the PowerPoint presentation to follow. Coffee and pastry will be served. If you have never attended this event and are a current resident and want to reacquaint yourself with all that Sun City West has to offer, please join us. Sat Apr 21 & 28, May 5 & 12          Movies in the Park. The movies are free and will be shown at Beardsley Park, 12755 Beardsley Road. Showtime will be at dusk, approximately 7 p.m., and open to the public. Light concessions begin at 5 p.m. with popcorn, ice cream and drinks all available for purchase. Bring a blanket or a chair and enjoy an affordable night out at the movies, under the stars.
