Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – April 23, 2018

 

Facility Projects:

  1. RHJ Tennis Master Plan is in progress. Courts 10-13 are ready for concrete pour on 45/24 & 4/26.

 

  1. The ARC Paint Booth project is in progress. The concrete footer was poured on 4/20/18.

 

Facility Maintenance:

  1. We are working on a schedule to have some warranty work needing to be done at the R. H. Johnson Pool within the next three weeks or so. This includes replacement of a dead palm tree, repair of a minor water leak and repair/replacement of a heating flue.  It will be necessary to close the pool for 3 to 4 days during repairs.  We should have the closure dates confirmed in the next few days andOnce we have determined the closure dates we will post the information.

 

Recreation:

  1. So You Think You Have Talent continues 11 am at Kuentz Courtyard. May 1 is the Grand Finale with two hours of entertainment. Dori Miller will supply punch, cookies and watermelon. You bring a sandwich if you wish.

 

  1. Come join us at our next Jam Session on Monday, April 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Kuentz Courtyard for two hours of entertainment!

 

  1. Our next Happy Hour is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25 on the great lawn. The show is free and kicks off at 6 p.m.  Join us for some great entertainment with John Gamber!  John’s guitar and banjo playing talents are enhanced with his smile-invoking stories and humor.

 

  1. We had our first Movie in the Park this season. About 600 people were on hand to see the action-packed drama, “The Mountain Between Us”.

 

Sports Pavilion:

  1. Sunday’s Bowling Special brought in $761

 

  1. We have sold 71 VIP Tickets to date.

 

  1. Our Best Bowler Tournament started this past week. Bowlers needed at least a 710 series to make the cut, which turns out to be a 235 average.

 

Library:

  1. Morning and afternoon sessions of virtual reality were held at the library last Friday and additional sessions will be available this Friday, April 27.

 

  1. Several different Library Groups, Adult Legos, Beginning Chess, Scrabble, Chess and the Writer’s Group plan to continue meeting during the summer. Of the four book discussion groups, three will meet in May, one will meet in June, and then all four plan to resume in the fall.

 

  1. Clubs are working on their inventories and are still picking up items from the Village Store but there are still over 3,000 items remaining in the store.

 

Financial Services:

  1. CFO Tony Struck has just about finalized the draft Budget Presentation for the upcoming Public Budget Forums to be held on April 24 (10 a.m. – Palm Ridge, B), April 26 (1 p.m. – Lecture Hall) and May 2 (5:30 p.m. – Lecture Hall). Please be sure to attend one of these Budget Forums and ask any questions you may have.

 

General Services;

  1. Our Marketing Survey has closed. We received about 600 surveys and will be compiling and analyzing the results and will share our findings with staff and the community.

 

  1. Our IT Dept. has developed the Divi template for scwclubs.com and shared it with our two community volunteers who will help us train the content managers (formerly webmasters). We are converting a handful of clubs at a time.  Clubs will be notified as their time for conversion approaches.

 

  1. We hired Jim Kanter for the IT Team Leader Position. Jim will report to Katy and will directly supervise the IT Team and lead projects, etc.

 

  1. We are testing out the new tee time lottery system and hope to deploy it in June.

 

  1. We are asking anyone submitting presentation items at Board meetings to submit them as PDF files instead of Power Point Presentations. We are having issues at the Lecture Hall with Power Point Presentations creating long delays when bringing them up on the computer which sometimes includes locking up the screen.  Presenting them as PDF Files will resolve this.

 

  1. The Association will abide by a new Arizona law making it illegal to represent pets as service animals. The new law was signed by Gov. Doug Ducey on April 17 making it illegal for pet owners to “fraudulently misrepresent an animal as a service animal” to businesses.

 

  1. We nominated our Virtual Reality Program at the Library to the Arizona Library Association for their October conference.

 

Golf Operations:

  1. Golf revenue was down 5% so far for the previous week compared to last year at the same time, but only down 2% this week. SCW members continue to play golf at about the same rate but outside golf play rate is down a bit.

 

  1. A meeting to discuss Group Play policy and procedures will be held today at 2:00 p.m. in the Par IV Conference Room in Golf Operations.

 

  1. We have started Preventive Maintenance on all Association Golf Carts. There are 156 of them to service in total.

 

Environmental Services:

  1. Desert Trails Golf Course reopens tomorrow, Tuesday, April 24 after spring aerification. Deer Valley Golf course closes Thursday, April 26 for aerification and reopens Tuesday, May 1.

 

  1. The parking lot islands near the Library are all prepped for planting and we are ready to plant 50 trees in that section of the R. H. Johnson Parking Lot. We expect planting to begin May 1.

 

  1. We added 41,000 mosquito eating fish into our ponds last week in an effort to control mosquitos out on the courses this season.

 

  1. We used 43 acre feet more water this year than we did last year at the same time but we are still 52 acre feet under our usage allotment. We are hopeful this years’ monsoon will give us some good rainfall totals.

 

  1. We have detected a clog in one of our water transfer lines that feeds the irrigation lake. We sent a camera down the line and it appears there are roots causing the clog.  We are working to clear the line.

 

  1. Lawn Bowls Courts 1, 3 and 4 are closed for repairs. Court 3 & 4 should will continue to be closed for repairs.

 

  1. Todd attended and spoke at the prides Breakfast this past weekend and gave the Prides a presentation on the upcoming removal of the small orange trees. We plan to start removing them in approximately 4 weeks.

Mon, Apr 23                                      JAM SESSIONS. Join us from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, April 23, for two hours of entertainment in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join in or just sit back and relax and enjoy the music. If you play a string instrument or other similar instruments join in on the fun. We supply sound and chairs for the musicians. Wed, Apr 25                                      April Happy Hours on the R.H. Johnson Great Lawn Wednesday, April 25. Happy Hour is from 6 to 8 p.m. and free to Sun City West residents and their guests.

 

On April 25, enjoy the “big” voice of John Gamber on the Great Lawn. John’s guitar banjo playing talents are enhanced with his smile-invoking stories and humor. John has enjoyed a long career performing in the Valley, including serving as the opening act for the Drifters at the former Skye Restaurant. Mark your calendars now for this special performance. BYOB and lawn chairs – coffee and ice will be provided. Please, no pets – service animals only.

 

Sat Apr 28, May 5 & 12                    Movies in the Park. The movies are free and will be shown at Beardsley Park, 12755 Beardsley Road. Showtime will be at dusk, approximately 7 p.m., and open to the public. Light concessions begin at 5 p.m. with popcorn, ice cream and drinks all available for purchase. Bring a blanket or a chair and enjoy an affordable night out at the movies, under the stars.
