 Subject:          Weekly Activity Report – April 16, 2018

Facility Projects:

1. RHJ Tennis Master Plan is in progress. Large structures have been removed and excavation is completed.  Light poles continue to be installed.

2. The ARC Paint Booth plan revisions were approved by Maricopa Planning and Development last week. This project is in progress.

Facility Maintenance:

3. We are working on a schedule to have some warranty work needing to be done at the R. H. Johnson Pool within the next three weeks or so. This includes replacement of a dead palm tree, repair of a minor water leak and repair/replacement of a heating flue.  It will be necessary to close the pool for 3 to 4 days during that time.  Once we have determined the closure dates we will post the information.

4. We have installed motion sensors in all golf course restrooms.

5. We continue to work on replacing the HVAC unit for the Governing Board Conference Room and another unit located at the Sports Pavilion.

Recreation:

6. So You Think You Have Talent continues Tuesday, April 17, 11 a.m. at the Kuentz Courtyard. Entertainment is provided by singer/guitarist Tony Miller who loves parodies and singer Betty Dorsey who has a wonderful voice.

7. Come join us at our next Jam Session on Monday, April 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Kuentz Courtyard for two hours of entertainment!

8. Our next Happy Hour is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25 on the great lawn. The show is free and kicks off at 6 p.m.  Join us for some great entertainment with John Gamber!  John’s guitar and banjo playing talents are enhanced with his smile-invoking stories and humor.

9. Our next Newcomers Coffee and Orientation will be held at the R. H. Johnson Social Hall on Thursday, April 19. Doors open at 9:00 a.m.  This is an opportunity for new residents to learn about what Sun City West has to offer and get acquainted with Sun City West Clubs and the Community itself.  Coffee and pastry will be served.

10. Our April Dance featuring Come Back Buddy happens on Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. at the Palm Ridge Rec. Center. THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!

11. Our Movie in the Park on April 21 is “The Mountain Between Us”, the story of two strangers stranded after a tragic plane crash must forge a connection to survive the extreme elements of a remote snow-covered mountain. The movies are shown at Beardsley Park and begin at dusk (about 7 p.m.).  Light concessions begin at 5 p.m. with popcorn, ice cream and drinks all available for purchase.  Bring a blanket and a chair and enjoy an affordable night out at the movies under the stars!

Sports Pavilion:

12. Sunday’s Bowling Special brought in $756.

Library:

13. Thirty ladies from the Macro-Knit Club staged a “Kinit-In” at the R. H. Johnson Library last Thursday, April 12. They displayed the many different items they craft for Phoenix area organizations and accepted donations of yarn, knitting needles, and crochet hooks for these charity projects.

14. Morning and afternoon sessions of virtual reality will be held at the library on Friday, April 20.

Financial Services:

15. CFO Tony Struck continues working on the Draft Presentation for our Public Budget Forums coming up on April 24, 26 and May 2. Please be sure to attend one of these Budget Forums and ask any questions you may have.

16. The March Financials went out this past Friday. Year to date we are a bit behind budget at this point which was anticipated.

General Services;

17. Our Marketing Survey has closed. We received about 600 surveys.  We will be compiling and analyzing the results and will share our findings with staff and the community.

18. Our IT Dept. has developed the Divi template for scwclubs.com and shared it with our two community volunteers who will help us train the content managers (formerly webmasters). We will convert a handful of clubs at a time.  Those clubs will be notified as their time for conversion approaches.

19. We are interviewing for an IT Team Leader Position. This person would report to Katy and would directly supervise the IT Team and lead project, etc.

20. We have ads coming out in the 2018 Surprise Visitors Guide and Community Resource and Relocation Guide. These publications have a long shelf life and are widely distributed in the Northwest Valley, so it will help bring visibility to our golf courses and lifestyle community from outside residents.

Golf Operations:

21. Golf revenue was down 5% so far for the month of compared to last year at the same time. This translates into approximately 600 rounds.  We attribute most of this to less outside play.  SCW members continue to play golf at about the same rate.

22. We will be holding a meeting tomorrow on the Lottery Upgrade with Totale Golf.

23. Golf Operations will be developing procedures on Group Play for the Golf Committee.

24. The need for the Call Center and Player Assistants is winding down. They are scheduled through the end of the month but we will end the programs early if not needed.

Environmental Services:

25. Desert Trails Golf Course will close on Thursday, April 19 for Spring Aerification and reopens on Tuesday, April 24.

26. The parking lot islands near the Library are all prepped for planting and we are ready to plant 50 trees in that section of the R. H. Johnson Parking Lot. We expect planting to begin May 1.

27. Unfortunately, one of our golfers was stung by 25 bees at Grandview Golf Course recently. We are in the process of putting fiberglass insulation in each of our irrigation valve boxes (1,000 boxes on all 7 courses) to keep the bees from nesting in there.

28. Environmental Services Manager Todd Patty is putting a plan together to remove the small orange trees along R. H. Johnson Blvd. Replacement plantings are being considered.

29. Lawn Bowls Courts 1 and 2 have been reopened. Courts 3 and 4 will be closed down for maintenance.

April 17 – Singer/guitarist Tony Miller who loves parodies.  – Singer Betty Dorsey. Her voice is wonderful.

May 1 – Grand Finale with two hours of entertainment. Dori Miller will supply punch, cookies and watermelon. You bring a sandwich if you wish.

Mon, Apr 23                                      JAM SESSIONS. Join us from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, April 23, for two hours of entertainment in the Kuentz Courtyard. Join in or just sit back and relax and enjoy the music. If you play a string instrument or other similar instruments join in on the fun. We supply sound and chairs for the musicians. This is open to Sun City West residents and guests. This month is the last month of Jam Sessions. We start back up again in the fall Oct. 8. For questions, contact Dori Miller at 623-544-6193.

Wed, Apr 25                                      April Happy Hours on the R.H. Johnson Great Lawn Wednesday, April 11 and April 25. Each Happy Hour is from 6 to 8 p.m. and free to Sun City West residents and their guests.

The John Leo Group Get ready to dance on Wednesday, April 11 with The John Leo Group. The band proudly proclaims, “We play raunchy blues and rowdy rock ’n’ roll.” Playing blues classics and rock standards, as well as ’50s and ’60s dance tunes, The John Leo Group creates an atmosphere where the energy and fun are highly contagious. Put on your dancing shoes and join the party!

On April 25, enjoy the “big” voice of John Gamber on the Great Lawn. John’s guitar banjo playing talents are enhanced with his smile-invoking stories and humor. John has enjoyed a long career performing in the Valley, including serving as the opening act for the Drifters at the former Skye Restaurant. Mark your calendars now for this special performance. BYOB and lawn chairs – coffee and ice will be provided. Please, no pets – service animals only.

Thurs, Apr 19                                    New Comers Coffee and Orientation. Newcomers Coffee and Orientation is being held in the R.H. Johnson Social Hall April 19. New Sun City West residents are invited to a Newcomers Coffee and Orientation. This is an opportunity for new residents to learn about Sun City West Chartered Clubs and get acquainted with all the community has to offer. The doors open at 9 a.m. for residents to visit with the clubs and service groups until introduction of staff are made at 9:30 and the PowerPoint presentation to follow. Coffee and pastry will be served. If you have never attended this event and are a current resident and want to reacquaint yourself with all that Sun City West has to offer, please join us.
